Golf Thread

Having a very brief stint of absolutely bombing my drives straight down the middle. If only I could get within 30ft of the pin with my irons I'd be dangerous. Sadly my mid range accuracy is awful.

No golf this past week, unless you could a couple of holes yesterday on the par 3 course before the rain got too heavy. I retreated to the cover of the driving range to find the green keepers loading the dispenser with boxes of new range balls as its so wet they can't get onto the range to collect any! This despite the extensive new drainage they put in last year which had made a big difference up to now. I guess that's what a very wet January and over 40mm of rain in the past five days will do. Looking at the forecast not expecting the courses to re-open any time soon :( On the plus side playing over at one of our sister clubs Hill Barn midweek. Situated on chalk downs drainage is excellent so hopefully the weather doesn't scupper my plans.

Listen I love a driving iron but it's spareingly used in my bag to be honest.

Unless I'm playing somewhere links like or super dry/fast fairways - My 4 iron is just as good as driving iron.... New T250 4 iron goes about 205 in the air... so maybe around 220/225 total in the summer. Got a 2 iron that I sometimes use but maybe only get another 10-12 yards out of it and it's certainly harder to hit than 4 iron....

I'd normally keep 7w in the bag instead.

I'm not saying don't try one but you need to be a "good" solid ball striker to get the most out of a driving/2 iron etc.

Think about the overall gapping in your bag and go from there. My 7w has got me out of so many tough spots after bad tee shots etc. Much more useful than driving iron for me.
Totally agree with this. The 7w is such a brilliant club, even out the rough it's just so easy and forgiving to hit!

Off for a wedge fitting at Precision Golf tomorrow after work. Interesting fitting plan, hit some normal pitching wedge shots then working out the gapping in between. Ideally sticking with the same lofts (I have 4 degree increments, PW @ 46, then 50, 54, 58. Will see what they say, I think I need a bit more bounce as all my wedges are 8 degrees - makes it tough when playing on softer courses/in winter.

They're also brand-agnostic there, so should get fitted into whatever works best, not just the standard "omg get Vokeys"

Is that an outdoor or indoor fitting? Guessing after work in the UK it's indoor :p

I'd really like to get an outdoor fitting tbh, like you say the bounce and stuff is so condition dependant... I've got 'high' bounce (10 or 12 iirc) in my 52 and 56 degree, and I mostly use my 56 degree for chipping, then low bounce in my 60 degree which is occasional chipping and almost all bunker shots... I like low bounce for bunkers and some chips but yeah higher bounce for full shots and 99% of my chipping seems to work better, especially now

Wedge fittings need to be outdoors - off mats/indoor is pointless for bounce numbers/grinds etc.

But - OMG - just get Vokey's - you won't go wrong there!

Well that put the kiss of death on it. Course was open all weekend despite considerable rainfall. Monday dry, yesterday while it rained all day the volume wasn't as great. This morning clear blue skies, warm temperature, course closed  Given the medium term forecast it could be weeks before I get out again :(

Bet you end up ordering a set of SM11’s ;)

I looked at them in the pro shop the other day.... They look a bit "rounder" than the SM10's and not done side by side with my SM10's but they look smaller head size to me....

Love my Sm10's - played around over a few years with Mizuno wedges/TM wedges etc - but can't see me ever NOT getting vokeys in the future.....

I did ask them about this, I was concerned as well. I'm ok with a fitting indoors, it's not just a case of "swing away and we'll see what you hit best." Apparently they have enough comparative data to be able to make assessment based on hitting off matts. I do agree that ideally it would be outdoors off grass, but let's see what they come up with. Definitely looking to explore different bounces etc.

Probably, can you win me some? ;)

Joking aside, my preference is being fit into something off the shelf - I'm playing off 12, so I don't need custom bounces/grinds - I don't think it's worth it to be honest!

Played TPC Sawgrass today on the SIM, came in with a 79 happy with that, it's a bloody hard course. Doesn't look like the weather will permit playing my course for a while.

Broke my driver head today.

Down the driving range and caught one very badly off the crown, thought nothing of it cause my driver is used to the odd sky. Then the next shot obliterated it, sounded like I'd hit it 500yds but it was just a nasty ting from the fact the top of the driver had a huge crack down it... Woh is me.

It is a Ping400 max so it's seen enough days but still, now I have to shell out £150 odd quid for a new one.

//update.
Since it's broken and I am far away from caring about how my equipment looks. I'm gona do a test of dremelling out a groove down the crack and epoxy it / sand / spray paint to see what happens. I enjoy experimenting..

Just had a quick scan on one of the second hand sites, can't believe the G400 is still 200 quid ISH.

Luckily I got a G430 off a friend that was only 9 months old and immaculate for £290. I'd been using a 917D2 for years. For us amateurs the price of playing golf is just extreme.

My membership averages out at about 66 a month which is very cheap compared to other courses in the country and my course has now been closed 11 out of the last 14 days. I'm going to be hammering it this season just to get my money's worth haha!

Point is, it really is an expensive sport if you're trying to keep up with everything, especially with tuition on top!

Yeah I was eyeing up some new irons yesterday at the range. They wanted £170 a club for some of the top range. £1k plus for 5-sw is absolutely insane. How do they shift enough product at that price.

I'm not gonna watch it cause sod Rick/LIV but I'm guessing the answer to the question in the thumbnail is "A big pile of cash"

Same way nvidia can sell a GPU for >£2k... Lots of people with too much money, somehow, or it's credit, something like that :p

I kinda feel even the Takomo's at ~£650 for a set of 4-PW is still a healthy chunk of cash, the fact that's prety much *half* the price of the mainstream bands is mental.
