Golf Thread

So i've got a fitting booked in a week and my play has completely gone to ****. Hit the driving range to try and fix and that didn't help.
Managed to get an hour lesson this morning, love lessons but it does make me wonder how i was hitting irons well previously and not so now... Things i'm not doing well;
  • Stand too far away from the ball
  • Stance too wide
  • Don't turn my body so backs to target
  • Club goes behind me on back swing
  • Flicking wrists at impact
  • Not hinging wrists on back swing
  • Right arm comes to far away from body on back swing
  • Body not rotating at impact
  • Throttling the club with my grip
  • Inside out swing
So yeh not much haha
So in the hour we mostly worked with a wedge just making sure the stationary setup was good then working on short chips (30-50 yards) concentrating on back swing to 1/4 swing and then small swing ensuring my body turned and not just arms.
Moved onto 9 iron and fuller swings.
Really helpful session so shall go back in a month or so for a follow up.
Then went onto the range with my lad and hit some duff shots but some great chips and a handful of awesome 7 iron shots. My normal 7 iron carry is around 125>130 yards but managed to hit a few around 145carry .

That's a lot of swing thoughts right there!!! One of the things I really like about my current coach is he just gives me one thing to work on and nothing else, if I had that list my brain would melt :p

Pretty much same thing for me, and if I do go to the range, it's to work on one thing only. At the end of the day when you go on the course you should be leaving all that behind you and just swing your swing. It's even more important when you get fitted. Defo don't go into that fitting bay trying to swing different to what your natural is or the last one thing you worked on, results will be completely skewed and a waste of time!

Golf is hard enough without a million thought rushing through your head at address to make it hard, give yourself a break haha

Yeh aim is to work on bits of it at a time and go back in 6 weeks or so and see if they're happy i've taken one or two of those elements and crossed them off the list. I went out this morning t'ing off at 6:25ish for 9 holes, got a few holes in before the water proofs came out.
Using what i learnt and concentrating on take away and loosening the grip loads, tends to be drop a few balls and i'll hit one of them really well, the others a bit crap but thats ok.

Good advise on fitting, will just swing without thinking about it. Unsure what i'll do with the fitting info, likely see what part of the bag i can make the most gains with and then consider shopping around for the best deal on them. Alternatively maybe if i get fit for something like the ping g440 irons maybe save some cash and get the g425s with similar make up and put some money towards a putter, wedges etc. trying to limit overall spend to 1k

Just remember don't feel forced to get the latest everything, as long as you have your specs. As an example last year's Ping G430 max 10k driver was a game changer. It's not gone bad over night, just because the G440 is out now. You could probably pick one up now for £380, even less second hand. Always worth to keep your options open.

Friend of mine has just splashed £780 on a GT3 driver with aftermarket shaft. Crazy if you ask me, waste of money.

Out today for a round in Bristol, started off under sunshine and blue skies but that didn't last... Can't this rain properly sod off yet? :p It wasn't too bad really but meh.

For the most part I played well, actually started off really really good with 3 over through 8, a chunk of that coming through putts, 12 putts in 8 holes!

Then I doubled the 9th, first double of the round, but still +5 on the front 9 with 14 putts. Happy days.

Back 9 wasn't as good though, started with 3x 3-putts for a start...

Still, overall an 85 which is playing to my handicap basically, 8 pars, 5 bogeys and 5 doubles, nothing worse than a double. Could be worse.

Got my first NCG event at Pennard on Wednesday, half-tempted to work out what my handicap would've been if not for their idiotic policy :p

Not having a good time with my back recently but played a mixed alternate shot competition with my wife yesterday as a last get-together for our mixed section before we all go out separate ways

Somehow I managed to drive the ball fairly well, but still chunked a few irons and wedges, and the greens were a bit rough and slow after the weather a couple days ago

My wife drove the ball well and played very well considering how little she has played since about October

Despite all this, we were only 2 points off the winning score which was a bit of a surprise

Hoping pain killers and stretching will help ease my back before Pannal on Thursday

I've a Ventus Blue I bought on Ebay. I absolutely love it, I bought a second hand G410 the other day and it came with a Mitsubishi soemthing or other which I didn't like..

I now think the Ventus might be fake. It's a little more flicky or regular than the Mitsi shaft and I have seen loads of fake Ventus on Temu.

I'm at the opinion that a shaft is only as good as the way it makes you play, £10 or £500. If it suits you it suits you but you should try all of them not buy before you try.

I presume it's not the more expensive "velocore" ventus shaft? Standard blue ventus is a stock shaft for a few manufactures. The Velocore is the upgraded shaft a lot of pros use.

I had a blue velocore TR shaft a couple of years ago.... Was amazing on the 2 days a year I was swinging really well.... but really hard work if your timing is off... Longest driver ever but most of the time, just really hard work....

Hence why I'm getting older, 50 soon, but can still hit a decent ball.... shaft is now a 55g stiff !!!! Not so much hard work

No just a standard 6s, was about £80.

Really searching for those extra 30 yards on my drives. Can get a drive past about 230-40 carry but I really want to get close to 280.

God knows how.

shaft/club ain't going to find you 30-40 yards.... Swing speed is your only thing that will move the needle by that large a distance.

you need a club head speed of around 110-115mph and ball speed around 170mph.... That's in the top 1-3% of all golfers..... despite the amount of golfers claiming 280-290-300 yard drives....

unless you train for speed/improvement you won't add 30-40 yards ever on your drives....And even then that would be a huge huge effort to add that much....

I thought as much and that's the plan. Speed stick and some gym work is on the cards. Considered getting a cheap radar to practice.

Would be interested to see you baseline numbers and then some post work numbers....Would cool to follow the work...... That's a HUGE effort to get 30-40 yards more....Good luck for sure.

Adding 40 yards to your driver requires roughly 13–15 mph more clubhead speed, assuming optimal contact. Generally, 1 mph of clubhead speed adds roughly 2–3 yards of distance.

Haven't been in here for a long time!

Have worked at a golf club/resort for a year now, and had a quick 9 after work and shot only 5 over

Handicap currently at 27.1 but haven't put a card in since the end of summer last year, so hopefully when we get to playing 18 after work soon that will start tumbling down! :D

Depends on the launch pattern and miss pattern as well. If a person has a bad fit initially e.g. struggling to achieve good ball speed due a consistent heel strike, coupled with a low launch a fitter could find a better combination of shaft and head that gets the launch right and has them confidently hitting the centre of the face more often.

Resulting in more efficiency, carry and optimal spin etc. I think depending on some starting factors there are potential significant gains to be made and you don't necessarily need to spend ££££ to get there

Well my back has said no to golf for a little while, went to stand up last night and instantly knew something was wrong with sharp pain across my lower back and difficulty moving

Very little sleep as a consequence and had a call with my GP this morning who has prescribed codeine to begin with, but depending on how it responds it may get other drugs included

Needless to say I am not playing Pannal tomorrow and the couple days at Celtic Manor may just be a stay rather than the golf that was planned

gutted for you - that's tough - I'd certainly try and find a good physio as well to help. Painkillers might help short term but longer term some rehab etc....

I was at gym this morning for 1st time in 10 days after my back issues..... felt ok thankfully - hoping to get 9 holes on friday before saturday 18.

Really cool insight into PGA tour - WAY better than Full Swing etc for geeks like me....
