Google Drive

In light of this (waiting for my account activation), what is the preferred client-side encryption? I'm sure there are other threads on this, but I wouldn't mind seeing it in this thread also (yes, too lazy to search. :D)

If you want or need client-side encryption, I think you'd be better off using a service which does it natively, and AFAIK Wuala and Spideroak are your only options at the moment. You could try using SecretSync with Google Drive/SkyDrive/Dropbox/whatever, or encrypt things manually, but it can all get a bit messy and inconvenient.

Out of interest, Wuala have just upped their free basic allowance from 2GB to 5GB, no doubt in response to Google Drive... full client-side encryption, a nice desktop application, and unlike Google Drive, SkyDrive or Dropbox you're not confined to a single base folder for syncing purposes. :)

I though google drive would allow you to select multiple folders to sync?

Nah, you can only select the folders to sync from the base "Google Drive" folder.

I'm starting the loooooong upload to SkyDrive. Pretty amazing service now when you combine the desktop client with 25GB free storage and a Windows Phone :D

so does it sync both way, if i edit a document on the phone it will sync the changes back to the pc... also can i have this on multiple pc's?

So if you set your base folder as C: and then only select two or three child folders from it?

You can selectively sync folders, but only within one base folder - you can't do something like "D:\Data\MyStuff" *and* "C:\MyStuff".

It does make things simpler I suppose, which is presumably what they're aiming for, but it would be nice to at least have the option.

edit: not sure if you can set the root of a drive as the base folder, you could try it I suppose...

Yes and yes, it's one of the main objects of the exercise really. :)

But could you select your base folder as "C:/folder/" and then tell it to only include "C:/folder/x/y/" and "C:/folder/a/b/" (& all their child folders)?

ps: Still waiting for my google drive to become available :(

I'm tempted to set my mother up with a google drive solely to backup up her "My Documents" incase her machine has a problem!

Yes! With any service whenever you edit something it should be mirrored to all devices and the cloud.

So if you set your base folder as C: and then only select two or three child folders from it?

Oh no. It creates a "Google Drive" folder (usually in C:\Users\*Name*) and by default syncs everything in that. Or you can have it sync only certain folders in that "Google Drive" folder. But everything is tied purely to that "Google Drive" folder.

@NeilFawcett

You can just make a symbolic link from your other folders to the Google Drive folder, so it isn't a bit deal really.

Same with SkyDrive & DropBox.

Yes, that would work, there's an option in preferences: "Only sync some folders to this computer" and you just check what you want.

Nooooooooooo, what that does is sync specific folders on the Google Drive cloud to your computer.

So if you had 'x' 'y' & 'z' on your Drive cloud and on your computer you wanted them all, but on your laptop you only wanted 'x' because of limited space then that's what that option is for.

As Filado says here what Google Drive does it create a Google Drive folder in the directory you choose.

So if you had Folder 'x' with sub folders 'a' 'b' & 'c' and you wanted to sync 'x' a long with it's sub folders it doesn't do that. When you initially start the program it asks you to assign a directory and what ever folder / directory you choose it will create the 'Google Drive' folder in there.

But to get around that as I just said you can create a symbolic link going to your Google Drive folder, or DropBox, or SkyDrive from any where else so it isn't really a problem.

And with Skydrive, if I signed up today, do I get 25GB? Or just 7?

I think it's only 7GB. The 25GB opt in was for people already using the service.

So if my google documents has:-
document1.gdoc
fold1/document2.gdoc
fold2/document3.gdoc

And my sync'd folder on my PC has:-
document1.doc
fold1/document2.doc
fold2/document3.doc

What do I see ultimately in my gdrive on the browser, and what do I see in my PC's sync'd folder? Surely I don't see this in both:-
document1.doc
document1.gdoc
fold1/document2.doc
fold1/document2.gdoc
fold2/document3.doc
fold2/document3.gdoc

^ Because that would be a horrible mess!

Surely:-
- Online documents should NOT be sync'd back to your PC. Is this the case?
- Your sync'd folder contents and online documents need to be held/shown completely separately when viewed by a browser? Are they? Else you end up with a mess like above!

I'm getting confused now, I thought that was pretty much what he wanted to do, with "C:\Folder" being the Google Drive?

You wouldn't have anything on in your local Google Drive folder to begin with any way would you.

If you've current got 'a' 'b' & 'c' Google Documents, that you originally had in Docs that have now been moved into Drive then if you set it up they will automatically sync back down to your local Google Drive folder.

Butttttttt if you put the documents into folders on Drive online, then as with the 'Only sync some folders to this computer' feature you can choose what folders and ultimately what stuff in your Drive gets sync'd to your various devices. Anything that isn't foldered and just on it's own will get sync'd to your devices. If you have 'a' and 'b' Google Docs and move 'a' & 'b' Word Docs to your sync folder, they will appear as so on your local folder and online. Because they're different file types Drive doesn't merge them as it were with the files having the same name.

Word of warning though, Google Drive client folder doesn't seem to like upload 'docx' at the moment, well at least for me. So you have to upload them via the website to convert them into a Google Doc.

Give me a moment and I'll get some screenshots for you.

I've finally managed to try it and download it!

It's exactly as I feared!

It blends all your local content and online content togethor.

So imagine I simply want to backup "My Documents" on my PC to my Google Drive. All of a sudden I get loads of google online documents and folders appearing in "My Documents" on my PC!?

And when I go into google documents online, I see loads of files/folders from my PC mixed up amongst my online documents.

Google drive is fine if you simply want to have documents/files being shared between online a PCs. But the idea PC files are shown amongst your google documents in the browser makes the experience there a right mess!

I use my Dropbox for example to share files between work and home. I don't want to see these files/folders in my online documents as it makes no sense!

The online documents should be kept absolutely separate from the sync'd PC folder contents for clarity! As it stands, it's a mess!

Here is a Word.doc and a Google.doc just on the Drive.

Here is using the folder preference sync. As you'll see I've set it to only allow 'folder 1' to sync with the PC, so 'folder 2' doesn't appear.

My advice would be to arrange stuff into folders. Have one on Drive cloud called 'cloud' and another called 'local' and just sync local to your PC? Or if you have both on your computer they'll be arranged accordingly.
