Anyone else notice the announcement at Google yesterday that CEO and co-founder Larry Page is handing over more day to day responsibility to Sundar Pichai, who until recently was responsible for Chrome OS and Chrome browser before taking over Android about a year ago? Pichai will be responsible for most parts of Google including search, G+, Maps, Infrastructure, Research, etc. A few years ago, Google co-founder Sergey Brin commented that Android and Chrome could one day merge.
Why bring it up in the Nexus 6 link on Overclockers? My theory is that the size of the Nexus 6 is part of a strategy at Google to see the phablet emerge as the main smartphone form factor that will blur the lines between a very small Chromebook sized laptop and an Android smartphone. The result will be that there will be no distinction between mobile and laptop, that a keyboard option will feature and that voice recognition will gain even more prominence. Artificial intelligence (eg Google Now type features) will play an important role as will stellar voice recognition----Google Glass operates almost entirely by voice recognition. Until now, Chrome OS has existed for keyboard input laptops (eg, Chromebook) and Android has been used exclusively for smartphones and tablets.
Could the Nexus 7 be the first phablet device (think large size) to integrate Chrome and Android? The Nexus 6 could be the first of a stepping stone to such a device, to get users comfortable with the form factor size. The promotion of Sundar Pichai at Google may herald this change.
