I've only bought devices with amoled screens, so therefore only samsung (motorola and nokia didn't really interest me)

I was all set for the Note 4 until the Nexus 6 was confirmed to have an amoled screen. Last nexus I had was the galaxy nexus, and ever since going to galaxy s and note devices I always missed stock android...

However this has put me off slightly

Overall, the Nexus 6 display is quite poor relative to the displays on other smartphones like the Galaxy Note 4. It has been speculated that Motorola is unable to source the latest generation of panels from Samsung Display, which would explain why many of the panel characteristics are similar to previous generation AMOLED panels in the Note 3 and Galaxy S4.

I don't think my ocd would let me happy with a device knowing I had a worse display. The display for me is the most important part of a smartphone, if the display is crap I don't care about anything else.

I'm leaning towards note 4 again I think....

The screen turning pink is a feature... it's actually a plus for me. I use f.lux on my PC to achieve this very thing. It doesn't turn pink based on the screen being dim it turns pink according to ambient light. It's so that the bright screen doesn't blind you at night. Magenta tones in the evening help with sleep patterns, using bright blue screens at night is bad.

I love f.lux so am very happy they added this.

So the pink is actually intentional and not a hardware screen issue?

Suprising. From the reviews most reviewers like the screen

A feature? Where does it say that?

From my experience amoled screns have always had "issues" at low brightness settings, and they have uniformity issues on dark shades i.e greys etc.

The ArsTechnica review calls it a feature.

One of the more interesting features of the 6-inch, 2560×1440 AMOLED screen is that, on the lowest brightness, it turns pink. We're going to call this a feature, and not a bug, since the screen can do normal-color low brightness at about the same level as the Note 4 (2 cd/m2).

I guess I've waited this long I might as well wait a little longer.

I think what I'm going to do is buy both and return the one I don't like.

Most people are happy with things, but I find faults in everything :D I remember starting a thread on xda that absolutely blew up (other "famous" sites were referencing it) about the purple smearing that amoled screens had when scrolling blacks/dark greys etc

It's basically due to poor response times similar to how va panels smear on dark colours.

I am on the ultra picky scale of anything I buy. If I have a tv and there's a slight uniformity issue it will bug me no end and I'll have to exchange it numerous times, until I get one I can live with or ultimately get a refund

Anyway, im buying one as i would like a new phone as an xmas present for myself.
You always end up with mixed reviews at the end of the day but the phone looks steller to me. Not going to get caught up on all the so called flaws as I know in real world usage I would hardly notice them.

And im sure the Android team will work to iron out an software issues.

Seems like more of a side effect than intentional. Not really an issue though.

Performance seems fine.. Ars technica seem to be exaggerating a fair bit. Anandtech couldn't even test the storage for some reason.

Just read the Anandtech review.

* Display - Worst part of the device I think, nice that its OLED and 1440p, but colours are horrible, brightness is bad and it seems like last gen Samsung OLED. I was really hoping the price meant they got the Note 4 display sadly its far from that.
* Battery life - Meh, will last long purely due to stand by life from the huge battery. But it seems the display is just killing it, 4:30 hours less then the Note 4 with similar specs on web browser is just baddddd.
* Camera - Seems pretty awesome for once, in decent light it blows everything out the water, and at low light its still pretty solid, very impressive.

Mixed feelings over the device now :/, was really hoping it was the Note 4 device that would have fixed everything.

This is exactly what im saying: "Camera seems pretty awesome" but on some otehr reviews they said its been average.

This is why i don't trust reviews and prefer to use the phone to make up my own mind.

Fallen God - You have the moto x 2014, what's the screen on that like?

The Note 4 screen in normal mode looks far to muted for me and I left it on photo mode so it pops nicely. Accurate SRGB is overrated imo, unless you use it for editing pics. As long as the white balance is decent and the colours aren't ridiculous, them I'm happy.

Same here, although I'm still not completely turned away.

Even older amoled panels are still leagues ahead of lcd displays for me, and the specs combined with stock android are tempting.

My only niggle at this stage is buying a device knowing I wouldn't have the "best" display.

But then with samsung devices I loathe touchwiz, I hate how they abandon devices with regards to updates, and I don't use the majority of the gimmicks samsung add. Plus the stylus is irrelebvant for me, as I've NEVER used it. I buy the galaxy notes purely for amoled and screen size.

I'll be interested to read the displaymate display review when they do it for the nexus.

Those are the iPhone tax sites where iPhone is great and everything else is meh, with a few shout outs to Samsung. Anandtech is one of the best places and it seems really solid.

Moto X is pretty nice mate, its a bit off at times but overall I like it. Also agreed, theres a reason why they need special equipment to find out if its sRGB, cause your eye's can't tell, however the Nexus 6 does very poorly. I got my mom a Note 4 and it is also on photo mode, looks amazing nothing still comes close.

Size was already a big deal breaker, for the SD card and battery life and screen just pushes it over the edge.

Do you turn it all the way down?
I normally use a tablet in bed so its a non issue for me but keen to know your thoughts

Yup i often have my brightness turned all the way down, at the mo it's on -4 auto I only really turn it up full outside on bright days.

I have my s4 on photo too though I also like movie, I'm still loving my s4 screen.
