Google Pixel and Pixel XL

I note Huawei are about to release a phone in the U.S. which will retail for $1300. Research has shown that consumers want all the latest features in their smartphones and whilst no one wants to see prices rise they are more than willing to pay premium prices.

You have only to look at iPhone shipments for 2015 to see that.

Most people have contracts or some sort of payment plan which disguise the true cost of the phone. If they had to pay the full price upfront then sales would plummet!!

Fingerprint reader is in the perfect location and my battery life is great Still loving it

Personally I feel the front is better for finger print scanner because they you don't have to pick up the phone. Around the house with its laid on a surface and at work on the desk the front works better

Instead they pay on average a third as much again than they would making an outright purchase. I have to say I've never understood the logic of paying more than the asking price.

I paid £699 to Google direct for my Pixel. I have a sim only plan with O2 which is 20GB data with unlimited mins and texts all for £20 per month. Now, if I keep this phone for two years I would have paid £50 per month equivalent.

I would never commit to £50 per month for two years! It really is all in the head. :p

I prefer it at the back. You have a power button on the side to wake it. Add your home/ office to smart lock and sorted.

Conversely it's better to pull it out of your pocket readily unlocked, as when you go to hold the phone your finger is likely already over the scanner (assuming front trouser pocket and you place it in your pocket upside down).

I guess it's just down to preference and usage, but each has their merits. bayo000 made a good call with location-based auto-unlock.

Take a look at the stabilisation from the 1 minute mark as I walk back towards the wall...

The two phones are held in the same device, holding a handle in the middle. One wobbles all over the place, the Pixel steady as a rock.

Impressive stuff. If you stand holding the phone still, filming, watching the final result you would think it's on a tripod!

They give with one hand and take with the other. Great stabilisation but the mic quality is quite a bit worse than other phones. Plus it's mono only!!

Just a quick post on battery life. I've had my XL off charge for 40 hours now with just over 3 hours 30 minutes screen on time and I've still got 32% battery remaining.

Does mono really make a difference? Surely the mic sources have to be a fair distance apart for stereo to really work and given phones are... Rather small how does it matter?

Really quite a lot actually. It creates a much more spacial sound and you can appreciably differentiate between left and right channels. Compare the audio recording quality with the V20 and it will blow it out of the water. Given the silly pricey of this phone, it should be specced with nothing but the best hardware.

Just the same with stereo front facing speakers on a phone, night and day difference compared to mono.

when you pan over the leaves, after that when you then walk the pixel is amazingly still like on a professional tripod. amazing the diffrence.

My manager got the 128GB XL over the weekend and I've been playing with it this morning. Feels lighter than it looks, but feels solid, one piece.

I like it as a whole, but dislike the stock icons and launcher. The screen is big, but the icons are not making efficient use of the space/dpi. Everything looks like a large PC monito using a below optimal resolution. I am used to the Galaxy S7 edge with condensed DPI, though, which feels much more up to date, if that makes sense.

The camera view in auto mode has more bias toward a yellow white balance tone compared to the S7 in office lighting. The lenses appear to be similarly wide.

The bezel space top and bottom could genuinely get annoying now that I've had it in my hands. IMO the S7 edge looks more premium and modern due to the curved edges and design aesthetic.

If I had one myself, the first thing I'd do is stick a dbrand skin on the back glass as it's a smudge and print magnet. Much more than the glossy back of the S7.

Wow! I had not appreciated how the rear glass of the Very Black Pixel attracts fingerprints. Thanks for that view. I think that is the first photo I have seen showing them. On my Quite Silver Pixel XL, fingerprints are NOT at all noticeable---the lighter colour seems to disguise the fingerprints.

I never realised people cared so much about phone speakers, what are you doing that it matters whether its mono vs stereo? It's still a crappy little phone speaker...

Well lots of people use their phone as a convenient media streaming source. Often this means using headphones as you are out and about but for some of us it also includes using the speakers a lot which is one of the reasons I picked up the 6p.
