Google shows off Android 3.0 - the 'Entirely for Tablet' Honeycomb

Guys... please advise... would it be short sigted to buy the wifi version?

Think it would be short sighted to buy the xoom fullstop, after the reviews of the screen and lack of accessory details. It'll only be a few weeks till a whole list of manufactures set release dates and costs.

I suggest waiting until the Tegra 3 comes out in August. The Tegra 2 chipset has a problem playing the most common h264 720p and 1080p rips (high profile). If you wait until August, the Tegra 3 will start to appear in tablets and that is the chip that should support full 1080p video.

Personally I dont want a tablet that requires me to reencode my videos for compatibility. But if media is not a high priority, then most of the honeycomb tablets will be reference designs with little to separate them bar price.

The xoom can only play mkvs if certain lower quality settings are used when the video is encoded. Most videos that are downloaded are not in these settings (awesome i know). So you then need to reencode them. Check out the xda forums for people bitching about it.

oh dear that is disappointing! and glad i knew that! so where does the problem lay? will/can software come out for it? one of the main reasons i wanted this is for watching tv shows/ movies i already have down the gym :(

not really been put off by the reviews and from what i have seen, im still quite impressed, what other options are out there? the Sammy and LG look and have the same spec

Same spec, but we don;t know what make of panel we have in them. There's hundreads of the things
As you said Samsung, Lg, Asus and a 101 other manufacturers.

Personally waiting for reviews on Asus transformer as it has a detachable keyboard with extra battery and if you leave keyboard attach folds up like a laptop so protects the screen.

The problem and Ipad is the same as are in fact most mobile devices. Only a problem if you download from torrent or rip yourself to an increadably high standard. There will be no fix till new hardware comes out from what I've read.

it seems to be a combination of both; one thing seems fairly certain and that is the Tegra 2 chip cant handle 720p high profile. Which I think is most 720p videos that would be downloaded.

does your netbook have ION? ION can certainly handle much more than Tegra 2.

Alternatively- if you only have .avis then the xoom should be able to handle them without a problem. The problem only arises with HD rips.

yes 90% are avi's and thats what i will want to play, but if the xoom is always gonna have a problem - ie hardware then i don't want to get that, but if its mainly chip based issue then surely they will all suffer :(

avi's should be fine- correct me if i am wrong but avis are not generally HD quality. AFAIK the xoom is 100% happy with avis. It is mkvs that are the problem

Here's a decent video review of the XOOM:

EDIT - I noticed in another video that the XOOM supports HDMI Mirroring @ 1080p. Excellent
