GoPro 3

Love mine, it's so much thinner considering my Hero2 had the wifipac too.

No update for me either, I can only think they mean to wait until the 14th.

There isnt a Black update until the 14th :)

Have one on order from GoPro and just noticed the ship date has now moved from the 13th to the 21st, starting to look a bit doubtful for Xmas now.

I tried it out at football this week. Filmed at 720p at 120fps so I could do slow motion shots, which was lucky as I got a ball smacked into my face so I made this little clip:

I'm a bit disappointed with the quality if I'm honest. 1080p video outdoors in daylight is really sharp, but filming indoors in this situation it just wasn't that sharp, even though it's plenty bright in there. Maybe as it was filmed at 720p? Does filming at 120fps reduce quality at all?

In terms of the quality of the upload, I have no idea what I'm doing with video editing. I used GoPro's CineForm Studio to convert to high quality Mov, then exported to MP4, put that in Premiere Pro and exported using some 720p HDTV H264 preset. Seemed to work alright but there's just so many options I really don't know where to start :(

Anyway, enjoy me getting hit in the face.

Yes, using at a high frame rate means less light getting to the sensor, so you get a noisier image which loses sharpness.

I discovered this when using my Hero2 diving for the first time where I used 60fps.

Basically in low light you want to use something like 30p or lower if you switch it to PAL in the menu. Should give a much nicer image. At the end of the day, the GoPro cameras benefit from all the light they can get.

Thanks Nexus, that's really really useful. That definitely explains the slightly disappointing quality. I think I'll give 1080p either 60fps or 30fps next week.

Here's another one from football, just messing around with playback speeds and stuff :)

The new firmware is out for the Black edition and it connects fine to an IPad and Galaxy S3. It makes it a lot easier to set all the settings, preview is very handy for getting it lined up.

I am using three of them tomorrow to video a speech at my friends wedding which 25 of us are taking part in as the chap that was going to video it dropped out at the last minute. Checking the video quality indoors set to PAL and 24fps it seems pretty good, I am going to record the sound seperately into a digital recorder with a good mic so hopefully it will work out OK.

(I have three as the plan was to sell two still sealed to cover most of the cost of the 3rd one, hopefully using them for a short time I should still be able to get more than £270 back I paid for them)

Why is the GoPro 3 Black £360 or $400?

Cheaper to get one in US and risk paying some customs charges and shipping costs. It would still work out cheaper than £400

I really really wish I had bought a few of them as well. I know it's a bit of a cheeky thing to do but I could easily have made a couple of hundred from reselling them.

I'll take one for £270 once you've used it if you fancy feeling Christmassy :)

How is everyone finding the battery life? I don't have a fast enough memory card yet so I'm just using it in camera mode for some time lapse videos.
At 10 or 30 second intervals I'm only getting about an hours worth of shots at 5MP.
What is everyone else's experience with battery life?

Haha, nice try :)

I filmed an hours worth of football the other night, 720p at 120 fps and it still had some juice left in it. I think it was down to the last bar though.

It doesn't sound like battery life has changed much from previous models. I found not much more than an hour or so doing time-lapse on the Hero2. I'm still not convinced that its the best device for time-lapse, even though its a selling feature.

I think the more critical thing at the moment is that batteries are even harder to get hold off than the Hero3 Blacks at the moment. You need more than one battery for these things and I think GoPro may have missed the boat a little by not being ready for Xmas.
