my attempts several months back were a total waste of time, though. I couldn't even figure out how to cast spells, so I gave up ;)

Gothic always made you work for your rewards. You were ages into the game beforey you got to spell casting, and then only if you chose the mage path. Mercanaries didn't get spells at all, but did get big ****-off weapons :D

Gothic games have been the most rewarding games I have ever played. With skill and practice you can become quiet formidable in combat until you come across an enemy who clobbers you. I did a lot of running away in those games only to come back after a couple of levels to smite them enemies ...ah the memories.

The only thing that worries me is that my single core CPU may struggle. Do you guys reckon it is worth upgrading to a 939 64 X2 considering Gothic 3 is the game I have been most looking forward to?

Well, it's always up to you really if you think you will enjoy the game better with a faster machine. My rig aint anything special these days and I managed run Oblivion quite nicely with many options on high quality after some heavy tweaking. Depends on Gothic 3's ability for tweaking too I guess, such as ini files etc....I hope its configurable enough.

But I'm not too worried tho, I'm sure it will run fine

Heres a nice read about the game it states the FACTS :)

FACTS

cool six guilds/factions: Assassins/Slave traders, Nomads, Orc Hunters, Woodfolks, Rebels which are loyal to the king and Orcs.

I have always found Gameplay very reliable for game orders, touch wood I have always received games a day prior to their offical release day from them which is quite cool. Still umming and ahhing about whether to order Gothic 3, do I want to get lost in another Oblivion type game and wonder where hours of my evening have disappeared to. :)

can you play as the orcs in this game?

or is it human, but you can side with them? which is what it seems from what little i can find lol
Basically your this human apparently based on the other gothic games but you aint got your magic or skills so your just a noob. And you go to this land to find its under control by orcs which you are neutral with and whatever you decide will swane that.
Theres 3 endings one good ending and one evil ending and the other is a secret apparently.
When you complete the game you get to read this story of all your actions that got you to the ending, so youve got your own epic story which im sure will be copy and pasted onto these forums for us all to read :)

Oh yes you are.

Like you I just can't wait. Gothic 2 was the best game I have ever played and hopefully 3 will take the crown. I am so tempted to take some leave next week otherwise I will be exhausted at work from late night sessions.
