GP2 & GP3 2013 Season

Is it bad that I don't want Bird to win?

If he does, it doesn't look like a spot is open in F1 for him, and he can't stay in GP2. He risks falling into no land land.

He may be better off coming a close second and then spending the next year working on getting an F1 seat while continuing to race in GP2. Maybe work on his Mercedes ties to get into a Merc customer team?

This is his third year in GP2 so he's already borderline as it is. Leimer is a fourth year driver. It'll come down to whoever buys a seat at this rate...

As for the GP3 standings, after being taken out in the first Monza race, I can't see Daly and Ellinas getting back into contention. Kyvat's been very strong in the feature races lately so he seems good for the title.

The reverse grid system isn't good either, letting perennial backmarkers like Berthon win...

Bird is British and already in Mercedes pocket, so buying a seat isn't really a possibility.

If he wins the championship I think he will end up floating around as Mercedes 3rd driver, which will be a shame.

I can see him being Gary Paffett mark 2 then. A DTM drive beckons..

It surely can't just be me thinking that the fact Nasr can hold P3 in the championship standings, in only his second season and without having ever won a race, reflects badly on the other more experienced drivers fighting for the title...

I've made no secret of my opinion that GP2 has been weak lately. McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari put their development drivers in FR3.5 and I expect more teams to follow suit.

Hard luck for Rossi with that brake failure, he was heading for a top 5 finish.

Bird scores a predictable win in the sprint race from the reverse grid pole position. With Leimer finishing third, and the rest of the title contenders not scoring points, it's down to a two-way battle at the finale.

At this rate, if Nasr's sponsorship holds up he'll probably get an F1 seat without a single GP2 win :p

I can't see Leimer and Coletti having much money left after four seasons of GP2, and Calado is unlikely to be considered on merit alone. The rest of the field are distinctly unimpressive or inexperienced - Richelmi has been a backmarker for two seasons of GP2 and FR3.5 respectively, Ericsson is in his fourth GP2 season and Palmer will also be in his fourth by the time he's a title threat.

Lancaster (if he's still around), Rossi and Evans might make 2014 more interesting.

I quite like Nasr, I'm sure he'll get a win soon enough if he sticks with GP2, it is only his second season and he is still quite young. Like you say though it is likely if he does get to F1 it'll be his Nationality and sponsorship that get him there, though I can think of worse people.

Calado seems well in with Force India now which can only be good for him, there is nothing stopping him from staying in GP2 another season or 2 though.

There are a fair few of the drivers who have had their chance or just aren't cutting it, but that doesn't seem to come into whether drivers stay or not :p

I'd like to see Bird get a chance in F1 but I'm not too confident, unless Merc decide to try get him a drive with one of their engine customers possibly... but I can't see why they would really.

Evans is probably the most exciting prospect from GP2 in my opinon (and Frijns but who knows what he's going to do now), although he's gone a bit quiet lately.

Nasr's good, but I think he's flattered somewhat by his competition in GP2, although outscoring Calado is worth something. With Massa gone from the F1 grid, I'm sure Banco do Brasil and EGX will think it's worth funding a drive for Nasr in light of the potential Brazilian fan base.

From what I've heard FI are not changing their line-up for 2014, and Calado's funding (from a British philanthropist) is not nearly as substantial as his GP2 rivals. $3-4 million a season is no small change for someone in his position.

Evans is probably the most exciting prospect from GP2 in my opinon (and Frijns but who knows what he's going to do now), although he's gone a bit quiet lately.

Webber's managing Evans so that will probably improve his chances in the future, Frijns has a new manager so maybe he'll land on his feet for 2014.
