*** Grand Theft Auto IV - The Official Thread ***

Im only on 15% not seen any stutter or slowdown yet on my launch day 360 had 2 lock ups tho.
theres been complaints on various forums of slowdown and stutter and both 360 and ps3.
I think its always gonna be the case on consoles anyone who thinks its not gonna happen on there chosen console is kidding themselves.

I don't like the linear nature of the main game in GTA4. The missions themselves are all the same. Shoot xyz, drive xyz, deliver xyz. Rinse/repeat but change the characters about.

I'd much prefer if they'd let you complete the game by different means. Say the ability to ingratiate yourself with a gang, and then carry out jobs of your choosing e.g. bank raids, hustling on the street, pimping, fighting over territory etc. There could be some real depth and variety in that.

Its still jerky, but its miles more smoother than the 360 version, to the point where its actually playable now.
So im gonna plump for a PS3. :D.

I have the PS3 version and the 360 version is better in terms of framerate.

As for silky smooth, I'll have whatever you are smoking.

Everyone has their own standards of playability when it comes to frame rates.
You have yours, i have mine. And in MY books, the 360 versions frame rate issues, which to me are issues, make the game unplayable.

Whats your intrest in a thread of a game that to you is unplayable then?

It's very interesting hearing people's different tales on frames and slowdown on ps3 Vs 360 but could it be possible that the game's running differently on identical systems that have different characteristics such as HDD space, network speed, media files and general set-up etc.

I mean the 360 and PS3 are the first generation of consoles where there are far deeper settings and capabilites the console can achieve and make them more akin to a PC and as is well known two identical PC's can have differences in perfomance based on what is lurking in it's background.

It just strikes me as strange that I've seen PS3's and 360's running the game silky smooth and them both running quite horribly. My PS3 runs the game with some frame issues, very obvious in rotating the camera and drops considerably when picking up speed. Maybe a test should be ran with brand new cosoles compared to older ones that have user configurations and files to see if there are any differences. :/

If this is anything to go by then it might be the case; nuking the PS3 back to factory settings may improve things for people suffering freezes.

I'm pretty sure some people just have genuinely bad vision or are lying when they same the game has silky smooth framerates, I don't think it has anything to do with console age to be honest.

My 360 is about 2 months old (Premium, Falcon) and my PS3 is from January (40Gb), both have framerate drops but the PS3 suffers considerably more on GTA IV.

mine does have frame drops, but there not bad at alll. out of the entire game ive maybe had 3-4 severe drops which i thought hmm, but thats it.

When you have a few stars and some stuff is going on then the framerate is always dropping. For me the fact it is on a console makes me worry less about what FPS I'm getting as I know there is nothing I can do about it.

PS3 hangs

Anyone had any hangs yet? We've had 3 tonight (PS3 version), the first ones we've had and they've corrupted my brothers 2 most recent saves. He was about 20% through at the time. Previous save before those two seems fine but my brother has lost a few hours progress. We also had to manually delete the corrupted saved to get the game on, since it has no front end to choose a save yourself. Kinda pathetic that the game crashing corrupts saves - that really shouldn't be able to happen

As for the discussion above, PS3 framerates definitely drop down to 10-15 fps when you've got more than 2 stars and have a few cop cars and helicopters after you (and you're in a car too). I don't have 360 version for comparison though.

He said his PS3 version wasn't unplayable....

Quite funny, as that version suffers more so than the 360. (I've played both, running at the same time switching between them)

Maybe he should try clearing the 360 cache.

Edit: To the above, yep a lot of people are having issues with the PS3 version with it crashing/stuttering.

Not had any issues at all myself. No stutter, lag, hangs or crashes. I also don't get THAT much slowdown. It does slow down a little, but it certainly doesn't go as low as 10FPS! Maybe your PS3 is overheating or something?

A lot of people are also having the same issues with the 360 version. The PS3 seems to be suffering more from stuttering, but the 360 seems to crash more.

Having now played both I think they both slowdown just as much as each other, though the 360 version has more noticeable pop-in. There is very little in them though, they are almost identical.

Stop trying to compare them and just enjoy the game!

Haven't heard anything about the 360 crashing, as for the pop-in I've only noticed a few times and only once or twice have I crashed because of it. (tree of doom + invisible barrier :o)

Now that I've moved my 360 to HDMI (thanks Kreeee for the component cable/optical audio hint :D) I've definitely picked up on the blur the PS3 version has, now that I can up the sharpness on the 360 it's considerably sharper.

I've been playing the 360 version more and more the past few days and it just doesn't seem to slow down as much, the PS3 seems to struggle a lot more when the streets are pretty empty, which is odd...

Edit: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/04/29/gta-iv-plagued-bugs

There are similar reports that a few Xbox 360 consoles have RROD'd when playing GTA IV, but this is hardly unexpected news...

lol :D

Ah well, let's hope they work the bugs out for the PC Version!

:D:D:D:D

If GTA IV is causing consoles to break, there could be some interesting issues over who pays for warranty repairs. The hardware manufacturer for producing equipment which isn't quite up to the job, or the game developer for putting out software which is just too much for the hardware to cope with (an analogy is some Blu-Ray discs which lock up or stutter on certain Samsung players)? Would be kind of ironic if GTA IV achieves infamy not because of the game content, but because of the real damage it appears to be doing to peoples' equipment.

Of course how many people suffering failures are sitting in front of their PS3/X-Box for 5 or 6 hours at a time without allowing the console a chance to cool down?

Think I will cautiously play through once, sell the PS3 version then wait for the PC edition...

Well I don't have poor vision as I have my eyes tested each year. I don't think it has silky smooth framerates either but other than a very occasional stutter I really don't notice a drop in framerate! I just think that some people are more sensitive to it than others tbh. If you set up two games side by side and had one running at 30fps and the other at 60fps then I could probably tell the difference, but ask me what it's running at in GTA and I wouldn't have a clue!

not likely lol. as if it'll be the games fault for destroying hardware. if hardware developes a fault running the software it is designed to run, then thats down to the manufacturer not the software developer.

Each to their own.
But as someone said, maybe it is down to peoples setups.
But ive found when ive tested both versions on my setup, the the PS3 version is significantely smoother for me. (1080p, both via HDMI).
Still not perfect, but far more playable for me.

Why do you have both versions?
Depriving some people of GTA4 when theres shortages!.....:p.

Tombo has answered that for me. ;)
(Thanks Tombo. :))

Its amusing all the, quite frankly, fanboyism, thats going on when either version is critisised for framerate.
Quite inappropriate really.

As ive said, everyone has their own preferences, but for me, when ive tested, both versions chug along at times, the PS3 seems smoother. The shadows arnt constantly fuzzy and it just generally 'feels' better. Add to that some other aspects of the PS3 i quite like and its a no brainer for me i feel.
