*** Grand Theft Auto IV - The Official Thread ***

please elaborate why the two consloe versions are completely different as from what i can see by the two screen shots above they are exactly the same
Since I meant "completely different" in terms of graphics you answered your own question.

The game is written the same way for each console allbeit only written differently for the rendering required by each Gpu manufacturer i.e Ati vs Nvidia
When it comes to PC games, *all* image quality differences between hardware come from the drivers. The game is not written a certain way for each graphics card.

In this sense the 360/PS3 versions of GTA4 are not the same, whereas a PC version would be universal.

I have put in some serious hours on this already and im just shy of 50%! Im trying to do all the sub missions and so forth and keep all friends happy @ same time.

can be annoying when on way to a mission and a friend calls to do something!

Overall this game is just freaking awesome, so addictive and so much to do its kinda of overwhelming.

The comedy club is funny! Never heard of that Katt williams before but his sketchs are wicked :D

Then you have a magic tv, because when I look up close it does look as pixelated as that screen would suggest. :p

i will take a picture of GTA 4 on my tv tomorrow, and i will repost it here, its best i can do, i sat and edited my settings on the tv for a good 20minutes.

yes on a pc the driver handles the images one written by ati and another written by Nvidia both handling the one pc game but differently one may slow down whereas the other may not one looks terrible when the other does not

on a console the game is written with the premise that one is Ati and the other an Nvidia machine smae problems as above but still the same game

the comparison is there

anyway the argument is ps3 vs 360 and the gpu manuf. are Ati and Nvidia so its still the age old my GFX card is better than yours argument as the game was probably ported from one to another anyway (opens a whole can of worms with that one)

p.s. I have a 360 and a ps3 and enjoy the game on both I'm just seeing the old ati vs nvidia argument coming out in this thread

I agree, and that's exactly what I was saying in regards to the difference. :p

On PC it's all in the drivers, on console it's mostly (if not all) in the game. So technically the different consoles are playing different versions of the game (which is pretty obvious or PS2 games would have played on Xbox etc. assuming the respective systems have drivers that handle the game.)

Nah the argument is which version has been better optimised to its console, and it's still in debate. I've not even made my mind up really as I honestly don't know how the PS3 version handles framerate (I get lots of framerate dip on my 360 version), but the PS3 version looks blurry to me.

As for the GPUs, the Xenos GPU is technically superior to the RXS GPU, but this is not why I bought a 360, and as you said that's a whole different kettle of fish. Some would say the Cell makes up for this but we've not seen any evidence of this yet to my knowledge.

But yeah, it's not about the GPUs. It's about which version/port of the game is better optimised.

<PS3 fangirls hear GTA4 looks slightly better on the PS3>

"Everyone get a PS3 GTA4 looks better on it"

<Turns out PS3 version is only 640p and no AA compared to 360's 720p 2xAA>

"It doesn't matter, they both look fine, who cares about graphics"

;)

source ?

people keep saying this but ive never seen anything to make it sound true

both versions look very very similar to me. just asthough the brightness and sharpness settings are different

I know your being light hearted which is cool, but in-regards to my posts, I was posting on the gaf comparison thread before we even knew what the render specs of either console was and even then I was saying the same, basically that thread consisted of people either liking or disliking the blur effect, nobody knew any different, then Quaz from the gaf confirmed that it was rendered @ 640p (at first he thought it was 630p, then he was sent a better lossless screen-shot, it was then confirmed 640p), later it was confirmed that the 360 version was using 2xaa, then it exploded into this comparison war, even though before this was found out nobody else knew any different, I do agree with you though that many PS3 users got caught up in hype of the reviews stating that the PS3 version was better, but I was not one of them.

I agree, and tbh I think the cell has already helped with the explosions in this game, they seem allot more realistic on the PS3 version and many people are conjecturing it's because the cell is helping with the physics of the explosions,

thats what i thought. it seems to be the same 2 people bringing up differences again and again

coming from an owner of neither console those screens on the last page are hardly different at all.

That is definitely a huge difference and could well be the Cell taking the physics.

I swear I've seen some explosions like that on the 360 though, just don't quote me on that until I check as I could be completely wrong.

K, I just went to check and I'm not being any sort of fanboy here but I blew up two cars and the explosions looked big and yellow like the PS3 shots. I don't know what's going on in the picture you showed me but I suspect someone blew up a bike instead of a car or something.

Yup, I just tried everything, grenades, molotovs, RPGs, different vehicles, bikes, shooting the engine, shooting the fuel tank, they all gave the same explosion as the supposed PS3 screenshots.

You can clearly see in that shot that a car is there not a bike lol, I'm not saying the 360 version doesn't light up yellow as much, it's just they look better on the PS3, here http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33469.html skip to 2:05 (the explosion comparison), the look quite different, the PS3 seems to have better blooms of smoke and fire, the overrule physics of the explosions look better, the smoke reminds me of the same sort of effect they used in 'Uncharted'.

Hmm, I'm really intrigued by that domed shape explosion on the 360 video, as I simply can't recreate it nor have I ever seen an explosion like that.

The plumes of smoke definitely seem bigger on the PS3, but from everything I've blown up, everything else seems the same.

what the, those arent true screens, the 360 one looks awful is that in HD?

How does the 360 look awful? It's far sharper than the Playstation 3, with some colour adjustment it looks a lot nicer than the photo shows.

As for the aliasing in that photo, it doesn't look like that from where I sit. (5-6 feet back, 37" LCD)

On a side note I fixed my Playstation 3 version of the game by disabling PSN sign-in...how retarded.

Wondering if we need an "Official GTA IV Bugs" type thread (mods?).

Apart from the PS3 issues I have found a couple of bugs in the gameplay. Last night I entered a taxi as a passenger, for some reason the driver cut down an alley where there were a couple of dumpsters on the right hand side. He kept repeatedly ramming them, backing up, driving forward but the AI did not have the intelligence to drive round to the left or turn round and go back out the other way.

In the end I exited the taxi and was charged $11 for going about 200 yards!

ATM bug reports are buried amongst all the general chit chat and, while it's unlikely R* frequent these forums, on the chance they do it would give them a focus to look for genuine issues?

OMG, those comparisons are miles apart, <insert fav console here> looks miles better because of the sharpness, resolution etc. I couldn't play the <insert other console here> version because it just looks so bad :(

Jeeesh you guys - seriousley, you have been arguing about which version is better now since tuesday and it's quite clear to anyone that there isn't a clear winner because they are so similar.

Yeah the graphics aren't up there with Gears or War or Crysis and you get framerate dips, but this is GTA so what did you expect... Stop comparing and start playing is what I say ;)
