Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 5th Feb 2021]

Intent clearly comes into the refs mind though. In the text posted by Jonny the wording is "accidental" and in the text posted by omnomnom the wording is "an attempt to play the ball", which goes to intent.

If what omnomnom has posted then I agree, technically it's a red but it seems like horribly written rules, as it ignores the possibility of a completely accidental foul where the player is neither going for the ball or the opposing player
As I said, I have no idea what jonny's quoting but Peter Walton was very clear and that was what my understanding was of the rule too. Unless you're making a genuine attempt to play the ball then denying a clear goalscoring opportunity will still result in a red card + a penalty. The rule has been made like that to prevent defenders 'accidently' running across the back of a forwards legs when they're about to tap the ball into an empty net.

Like I said earlier in the thread, this is a consequence of the change to the original rule. We're always trying to tweak rules because one particular instance seems harsh and the end result is we make more problems in the future. It's the same as the change to where they measure handballs. We changed the rule because people thought it was harsh to give handballs for the ball striking the shoulder area and now we're instead flagging people offside because the top of their arm was ahead of play.

Southampton are very bad at low block, I think 10 or 11 teams would have given us a tougher game with ten men than this
We're bad at defending generally, usually we press other teams enough that the defending is done in midfield. Whenever we end up having to actually defend we look embarrassing.

On the up side, at least people might not need to bang on about the Leicester 9 - 0 all the time by the time this one is over.
