Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [8th - 10th April 2022]

Surely it's ok for VAR to turn round and go 'we don't know'?! Stick with whatever the on field officials decision was. Happens in rugby the TMO will just say I can't tell.
That's the whole point. It's supposed to overturn obvious (in hindsight) mistakes by the onfield officials, not re-referee the match, looking for any 50:50 decisions and working out it's 49:51.

Think I've said this before, nothing to do with Arsenal, there should be a 2min timelimit on VAR, if you can't prove the officials got it wrong in 2mins, you get back to the game as normal.

That's not how it works for offside though, offside is a clear cut rule, there is no flex. If he's offside, even by half a millimeter, and it's not called at the time, that's an error.

Do I think the offside rule needs changing slightly to adapt to the VAR age? Yes, certainly. However, until that rule is changed, there's not much VAR can do. In this instance though, I'd like to actually see what they're deeming the offside decision on as I don't think they can clearly make a decision based on images seen.

'Clear and obvious' has never applied to offsides. VAR will use whatever camera angle they can find and apply the technology. Situations like this, where it's incredibly difficult to find an angle showing both the attacker and defender, are one of the issues but they will become a thing of the past with the new var/offside system coming.

Southampton are such an odd team. Of all the smaller sides, they're as likely as any to take points off the biggest sides but they're also as likely of being battered by anybody too.
