Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [4th - 6th November 2023]

Key thing for me is whether Joelinton chests the ball forward to Gordon or if it's sideways. If it's forwards, then it's offside. If not, the fact Gordon is nearer the goal than the keeper doesn't matter.

The problem is in the vid I've looked at it's not clear if the ball goes forward or not, it also clips Gabriel after Joelinton making it go more sideways/backwards, which means at first glance it doesn't look offside due to the change in angle, but the important bit is what angle did Joelinton originally play the ball. Watching the VAR check live I said it was offside. People will hate me for saying this but I thought they rushed the VAR check for offside, people want quick decisions but there were 3 separate things to check and I'm not sure how much time they spent on the third incident.

The direction the ball travels in is not relevant. Gordon is only offside if he was ahead of Joelinton, regardless of whether the ball went forward, sideways or backwards and just watching ther replay, it doesn't look like he was. It was however a pretty clear foul on Gabriel though.

In “real” time it doesn’t look like a foul. The super slow replay with the hands on the back I’m more thinking it’s a 50/50 he sticks his bum out/body into him he puts his hands infront. Can see both sides of the argument as well. Im fine with them looking at that and saying it’s fine give the goal. Likewise if I was an Arsenal fan I’d be raging that it wasn’t given as a foul. Think there’s going to be more and more of these type of things that are grey areas if you will where it’s just purely down to how you interpret the laws of the game or whether or not it’s for or against your own side.

I was under the impression if it’s not clear and obvious VAR wouldn’t get involved. Don’t think the laws of the game work that well with the way VAR has been implemented.

I’d be happy with semi auto offsides. Missed reds, so today Havertz would have been sent off from the VAR. Not given from the ref so that’s why he let Bruno stay on the park.

While writing this I remember that VAR couldn’t get the Wolves pen right so it’s basically a waste of time.

I'd like Arsenal to have won that, but can't see any decent argument for that goal to have been ruled out.

Also, I can't stand Gordon but he deserves a shot on the left for England

I can get some being upset the foul wasn’t given as he had both hands on his back although he did go down a bit easy. Some you get and some you don’t.

Its almost as if a foul is subjective ^^ (just to quote a few people on here)

It didn’t help that every tackle Arsenal were throwing them selfs on the ground and time wasting since the 3rd min.

Also people acting as if Newcastle have never been on the bad end of decisions lol. Err we got two apology letters in the same season for awful calls.

Just about to say the same thing  , it’s normally me that’s in the cake, I though Baz might have kept that big pig suspension for the day Newcastle actually win something :cry:
We keep smashing teams like PSG, Mancity, Manu and Arsenal. We won’t have to wait to much longer!!

It will be glorious!!

It was generally pretty dirty match in terms of fouls and bad sportsmanship.

Tasty wasn’t it :D

I think the whole of Brazil was cheering on Bruno versus Jorginho the little turn coat!! And I’m glad to see it Bruno been double team, kicked, elbowed and stamped on for nearly two season now and he’s getting his fire back. Skirting very close to the edge mind.

Arsenal best player on the pitch was Rice by a country mile but they never looked liked scoring in a million years.

Has that rule changed? Always used to be a pass back towards your own goal was not offside.

I think that ended up being the point, VAR couldn’t tell conclusively with the angles provided that it was an obvious error so couldn’t advise overturning it (the on field decision).

No that's never been the rule, it's just a common mistake people make. As I said it's the position of the attacker receiving the ball, not the direction the ball travels that matters. If the attacker is behind play then he can't be offside. The direction the ball travels in makes no difference to an offside decision.

I thought it was behind the ball? (which you may mean btw..)

"any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent" << is from the official FA site.

The direction the ball travels in makes no difference to an offside decision.
100% correct.. if the player who receives it was behind the ball when it was kicked/touched then it makes no difference if the ball goes forwards of backards.

@BaZ87 hope you don't mind me quoting you above, just trying to clarify for @Vanquish-Storm and @HangTime ..

Bad refereeing decisions happen and will always happen. I don’t even think this is a particularly egregious one.

If I were Arteta, the question I’d be asking is why my team couldn’t score.

That will be because we bought Havertz and not a striker.
