Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 14th Feb 2012]

I don't think the handshake changes anything. A token gesture of a handshake isn't going to change their feelings for each other.

No, of course not. But at the end of the day it's a formality that would have started the game on the right foot. I think Fletcher was right in saying a post game handshake would be far better and it should be the responsibility of the home team to organise one.

Yes okay I see your point, but I would accept it was a joke and when you saw that I'm sure you would apologise, Evra never really had any intention on just seeing it as a cultural misunderstanding did he though? An apology behind closed doors do you think would have made any difference?

I personally think Evra is playing for it, Suarez may or may not have ever gone for the hand shake, once he saw the hand retract he may have thought **** that, I don't know.
Rio did admit it saying he lost all respect for the guy and some other stuff.

Wumming our fans at their armchairs :p, and certainly wumming the players in my opinion, but like I said, if one of our players did it I wouldn't blame them.

And Ferguson could have held to his word of just wanting to be focussed on the football and said no comment. And also a hypocrite in that if he wants Suarez out of football so badly he has had a few players himself he should have booted out if these are his standards.

I think an apology would have helped no end. Of course Evra and Suarez still would have hated one another's guts but still :p

Fair enough about your point on Fergie but I've already said him commenting on what Liverpool should do with Suarez was stupid anyway and shouldn't concern us whatsoever

That is not really the point though is it. I agree that a handshake means nothing at all in real terms, and it wouldn't bother me if they scrapped them, but in this situation at least they were asked to make a gesture to show that the incident was behind them and that they would play the game in the right spirit. Somebody(gonna leave it at that as I haven't seen a replay) refused to make that gesture, and he doesn't do himself any credit by doing that.

I find it hard to believe that it happened at all tbh..

I think we may have to say the Suarez/Evra matter is now closed on here as it is taking over

quick opinions as to whether folks want this ( no expanation or debate, just your opinion )

Yep I'm done :)

Still want to know what Rotty did that was so bad though :p

EDIT: Oh he insulted Purdy... is that all? :D :p

Genuine question. Does anybody give a **** about the pre-match handshakes? What would Suarez and Evra shaking hands prove? They'd still dislike each. A false show of respect changes nothing.

Personally, I've posted before and said it wouldn't be missed.

Why's the emphasis on Suarez to instigate the handshake and not Evra or both players equally?

Umm, because he was the one in the wrong? He was found guilty? Personally, I think Suarez should have put his hand out and tried to move on from it, Evra should be thinking the same but the emphasis should be on the man in the wrong no?

I agree on the apology if Evra would accept that it was a cultural misunderstanding and Suarez meant no offence, but that would never be the case really would it :p.

Agreeing with a lot of your post after a Liverpool ManU game is quite weird though.

You still weren't by far the better team at Anfield last week :p

I don't want people to keep talking about it, because its pointless, but I don't see the point in forcing them to stop.

I don't think this is going to be as bad a bun fight as we'd have before anyway. No-one seems to be particularly angry with anyone else.

Shaking hands wouldn't put the incident behind them though or determine whether they played the game in the right spirit. If the incident isn't behind them then shaking hands is a false gesture and counts for nothing.

Just swap it to a new thread or something if people really want to carry on talking about it and keep this to the actual football discussion.

People can then avoid the other thread if they wish then and just keep it from turning into angry bickering I guess.

I do agree, however in this case refusing to make the gesture(however meaningless) is much worse, and does count for something.

Repeatedly really. Think you mean Robbo though :p

I don't get why people don't understand his stance that he did nothing wrong so feels he doesn't have to try and make it right if he feels the guy has lied about him.

Kind of like Robbo not understanding how in the blue hell that Kenny could ever defend Suarez.

Why?

It's a big talking point in English football at the minute, it has knock on effects for the image of the English game, certainly coupled with the Terry fiasco.
