Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 14th January 2014]

I think Welbeck is getting a bit of a rough deal here, he's been better at finishing lately and seems to be improving overall.

He's infinitely better as an isolated striker than Hernandez. If you had both at the tip of Arsenal's team then I think Hernandez would be far better.

Welbeck's is nothing special. The simple reason he doesn't start is because both Fergie and now Moyes prefer a grafter. Hernandez is much, much better.

Hernandez is average at best. He can finish and do nothing else. Welbeck is intelligent, moves very well off the ball, and his interplay is excellent.

I'd actually argue that he's not at the right club to get the best out of him. With the exception of Januzaj and Kagawa, none of your other players can pass and move intelligently. If he was at arsenal, for instance, I honestly believe that he'd be seen as a much better player.

I just don't think Hernandez works very well at Utd, stick him in a team with quality in midfield and he could easily be a 30 goal a season striker.

Oft, we're in trouble. Big transfer window for us, could happily get rid of our whole defence with the exception of maybe Riether...

In other words, he offers little beyond pace and finishing.

Not even that pacey, he's just very reactive, and late in games defenders muscles aren't at their best so his fresh reactions are so much quicker he usually beats the man to the ball. It's a great skill, but it's a utility for a squad, not someone you consider to be in a built starting 11.

I've never considered Hernandez over Welbeck, but that doesn't mean Welbeck is good enough for a team with the ambitions and heritage of United, where as Hernandez has a purpose and an ability that can be used.

He'd need another striker alongside him though, which in this day and age is a real rarity. They showed in the analysis last week that whenever Utd get the ball he runs away from play. It means there's nobody linking midfield and attack, which was fine five years ago when you could bung an Emile Heskey up front alongside them to do that, but nowadays that doesn't work. Strikers have to get involved in the play, and Hernandez is incapable of that.

Name one world class striker who doesn't involve himself in the buildup play. The only one I can think of is arguably Benzema, and he gets much more involved than Hernandez.

Hernandez would have been a top striker 5-10 years ago, when the likes of Michael Owen were tearing things up, but nowadays is too much of a one trick pony.

That was a bit more like it. Hopefully with RvP and Rooney coming back we can build on this.

Can't see us winning next week though, be lucky to get out with a draw. :(

Moyes must realise that Kagawa is so much more effective in the middle. Even when Rooney is fit I'd play him off the left, Januzaj off the right, and then let them nterchange as must. RVP up top of course.

Ok your not playing good football for the most past and that side is the worst united side I have seen since Mclair was in the side (but we have been saying that every year since ronaldo left) but 9 points off the top isn't that bad considering how crapped out that side is.

If we can get RvP and Rooney playing together in that side (as it was today) then that's going to be a massive boost.

Valencia really did very little today aside from the goal, a couple of good moves but the rest of the time he was barely near the ball. Fletcher and Carrick are solid as a midfield duo but only really in a defensive sense and they don't have much mobility between them either.

If we have Januzaj/Kagawa/RvP/Rooney all playing as the front four and then Fletcher and Carrick behind them, that would do (out of the players we have now). I don't think Moyes is even sure what his tactics are at the moment which doesn't help. We had no gameplan today and ultimately resorted to passing it to Kagawa or Januzaj who then had to feed Welbeck or the often overlapping Evra. I suppose you could argue Moyes wants us to play on the counter attack but why not even make an effort to pass it a bit and create something instead.

The problem probably is that he see's 6 players or more with no future at the club, so building a team knowing 6 of them won't be there is probably frustrating for building a unit and getting your best 11 and formation for now.

I look at the side and think my god where would you start first for replacements. I think I'd go CB's and RB.
