Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [14th - 17th Jan 2012]

So you're still going to end up with 1 striker and Downing on the wing (who you've regularly complained about) or a fullback. Why not play 3-5-2 with Kuyt alongside Carroll and 2 natural wingbacks bombing forward? It would also allow you to bring Coates into the side to help out at set-plays.

Funnily enough, we almost got a chance to see that today.
Only for whatever reason Enrique and Johnson were instructed to play inside/narrow once crossing the half-way line.

Johnson would come inside when Skrtel pushed forward down the right but Enrique never came inside as Coates didn't get forward much.

During the first half we got in behind their fullbacks a fair few times, the problem was Kuyt had dropped deep to play the through ball and none of the midfield got into the box.

Once Carroll came on for Downing we looked a lot better; we just lacked that cutting edge around the box and against Stoke, if you're going to look to get wide and put balls into the box then the delivery has to be excellent which they weren't. That's probably the reason why we initially went with Kuyt up front on his own and looked to get our midfield running beyond him.

Should play David Luiz up the pitch more, his got the confidence and decent on the ball. But for pure comedy moments for the neutral keep him at CB !!!

Haha only because he is one of the most unnatural cb's of all time! Dreadful awareness and 0 positioning making him a brilliant laugh!

Azza is Donovan as good as he was? You watch the game?

Nah I was too busy destroying my mobile. But he hasn't been as good until today. Easily MOTM from what I watched on Football First today and read. Apparently didn't stop running with and without the ball, and that pass to Anichebe was superb. Something we've sorely lacked and will miss when he goes back to the US.

Love hearing Lineker wound up about the stupid what's fair and unfair tackle rules! Got it summed up that all the tackles shown out of conetext are basically the same so the fa are just annoying everyone...

But really onwards with good football :)

Is it just me that thinks the Woodgate tackle wasn't really worthy of all the fuss? It wasn't that bad, a yellow card maybe.

It's down to interpretation of the laws; for a challenge to be a red card it must be deemed to use excessive force. I've seen a fair few red cards for challenges with a lot less force than Woodgates challenge.

Just nothing at all!

FL show is a good laugh! Watching Martin's miss over and over still makes me laugh, saw his 1st professional goal last weekend after so many comical misses... Plus hearing Cotterill makes me thing "football genius" over and over...

I think Southampton are streets ahead tbh, by far the best team in the league.

 even I don't think we are that good... Admittedly I haven't come across a team that would be better in the champ any day, just a few that have been better on the day (plus we could do with one or two players to really put a bit of a gap with the 5 striker west ham).

One think I have learnt about the champ, its RUBBISH! A lot of teams that are very complacent (read over paid) that give hoof a go to get to the prem without any real ideas. You can see all 3 teams that came up last season don't look too bad one way or another and a few of the teams that have come down to the champ have really pushed their luck on how to play...

Tummy I see what you mean with cafc, 30 seconds of highlights, them with 9 men behind the ball, a class free kick and their manager grinning like its christmas says it all.

Just a little lucky Bradley hasn't been on form for a while now

I do, They play the best football of all the teams at the top imo.

I will be disappointed if West Ham or Birmingham get back up this year, they still have many players that played in the premiership last year and they have not looked like it in the slightest. They look totally average to me. West Ham have been very professional I suppose, but there are many teams that play much better football than them.
