Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [14th - 17th September 2012]

Purdy - although there's contact, it still looks like he could have stayed on his feet to me. Felt the contact, leaned forward and went down.

He was tripped, it was a penalty. Players don't have to do everything they can to stay on their feet, in fact I believe that if you're tripped then you have every right to go to ground because time and time again officials won't award fouls when a player stays on his feet.

Chelsea's performance today was a bit worrying.
Ignoring the battering AM gave us we've been playing some good football so far but we just didn't get going today.
It was never going to easy mind due to the situation surrounding the game so maybe an away point under those circumstances is good.

:o

Yeah, :o
Ball going right, body going right, left leg going left in to defender's leg.
He's either got rickets or he intentionally made contact with the defender hoping to get a pen.

Then its a dive by definition...

Watch the full incident on MOTD. It was a slaloming type run of his - of course his body is still going to his left as he's cut back inside after going on the outside initially. O'Shea sticks out a leg and trips him. It's a straight forward foul.

I didn't comment on whether Suarez could have stayed on his feet or whether he tried his best to do so, it was a general point in reply to your claim that he could have tried to stay on his feet so I'm not sure how I've defined that as a dive.

I know you should be good at analysing this stuff after years of Drogba but you've got it horribly wrong, he has just changed direction after going towards O'Shea, he has nicked the ball past him and O'Shea has stuck a leg out and tripped him.

Could he stay up? Maybe, stumble, do nothing. Why would you, you've just been fouled. Either way not the 'dive' people were happy to call it after seeing the 50 yard away camera shot.

Good grief, can you not see his left leg flapping out towards the defender?
You just try doing that, your whole body going right at pace and just your left leg going the other way.
At least when a Chelsea player dives I have the decency to admit it.

I see him turning, have you ever ran before and changed direction?

His whole body was going left just before going right. Try doing that - the top half of your body will lean to the right before your legs can catch up.

Never, I've only ever run in a straight line before, turning is far too difficult.
I've seen other people do it though and I can't remember them neglecting to take a leg with them in the direction they turn, unless they meant to of course

Where exactly should his left leg go if his stride isn't impeded? I find it funny that anyone could think his left leg should be going anywhere else if he actually wants to use it to run with :p.

Perhaps he was well aware that O'Shea might catch him, maybe even hoping, doesn't change the fact that O'Shea takes all leg and no ball. Clear as day penalty.

Ignoring the Suarez incident then you still encourage diving which in turn is cheating.

He managed to get his right leg going in the right direction & following the ball so I guess he just forgot he had another one.

Edit: His hips were square too, just his left leg was left behind for some reason, prior to contact.

It depends on which way you look at it - I don't believe that going to ground when you're fouled is cheating. But if you look at it that way then I believe that refs are encouraging diving (and cheating) by not awarding fouls to players when they don't go to ground.

How often does a foul get awarded when a player stays on his feet? Very rarely.

Well his right leg will move to the right before his left does, obviously and it's not as if his left leg is very far from his right.

It's a foul but it's also a dive (however is it a penalty? Does he even have the ball under control?). The likes of Pires used to do it all the time, kick out your leg into the defender and go down.
