Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 22nd August 2011]

We have Vermaelen back which is "like a new signing", does that count? :D

:p

Seriously though, not really, it wasn't Verm who was great the season before last, it was hte partnership which was so strong, Verm may have been injured but the partnership was broken by selling Toure and letting Gallas walk off, on a free(yet another player we could have kept for cheap or sold if he was under contract).

Verm is back, but with Djourou and Squillaci the only potential partner is Kos.

I've also mentioned before that Kos has never had a real shot as he's had to play along Djourou/Squillaci, Kos looks VASTLY improved with Verm alongside him, so he could turn out ok, though the way he limped off I would be surprised to see him back quickly.

Usual nonsense from Wenger:

Wenger: 'We look [for players] and we try to do the right thing for the club' #arsenal

Wenger: 'For us it is important to lift the players... I give them credit for their attitude and performance' #arsenal

Wenger: 'Frimpong was a victim of his inexperience... we had eight players out but we had a good performance' #arsenal

Wenger: 'I feel under pressure but not more than usual... I feel the result was harsh on us... the offside goal decided the game' #arsenal

In hindsight we should have kept Gallas and sold Nasri, could have done with his experience though it looks like his fitness might be a problem nowadays. Koscielny looked really good until that injury, if they can both stay fit then him and Vermaelen could be one of the best partnerships in the league. That's a massive "if" though, I don't really rate Djourou and Squillaci just looks error prone.

Is Squillaci injured, I didn't remember him being injured. If not was he dropped off the bench for a kid who has basically never played before because Wenger rates him so low? If he won't even put him on the bench, why is he at Arsenal?

Also yes, Nasri should have gone rather than Gallas, who is a leader, one of the best CB's the EPL has had, has been part of 2 fantastic defensive partnerships and won loads of stuff. I think Terry and Gallas was just about the best CB partnership the league has seen, their defence is still good but not "as" good as those two at their peak.

All to keep Nasri happy, a little git with a huge ego, an attitude problem, lazy and fairly injury prone himself. :(

I'd say it's because just like the plane his head is in the clouds too. :p

Good performance. I was beginning to question Kenny on why he didn't bring our little magician on sooner but all ended well.

Only the Raul situation, i'm a little disappointed in him. He's usually a model professional and doing that today kind of soured the moment.

Like previous posts, i'd like to find out what exactly it was aimed it.

Didnt see the Liverpool/Arsenal game as I was watching the Newcastle/Sunderland game but I heard Adam tried a shot from the half way line because Szczesny was off his line. Now R.Taylor tried this last week too as he was off his line and I think he will do it a lot this season, will only be a matter of time before it becomes a success for someone.

I just sent a tweet to Lucas but who knows if he'll reply.

I think he's injured, he was sitting next to Gervinho just behind the bench. Apparently the Nasri transfer has broken down, I hope that doesn't mean he stays for another season, picking up his pay cheque before going off somewhere else for free.

Wanted Arsenal to win because it's funnier watching them crumble as the season goes on, but tradition for Liverpool to do it in the first month.

Was obvious that it would take Suarez to make something happen. Even with a side as depleted as Arsenal's it took depending on a single player.
