Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [17th - 22nd December 2011]

Berba esk, uesed skill to get round people, loss of confidence means he wont try it. so he looks crap.
Unless AVB plays him week in, week out, he's not going to gain in confidence.

Drogba's past his peak so it's a no-brainer really.
Either way, I'd be happy for a swapsies with Carroll :o

It's probably worth me just enforcing my point that my criticism of Spurs is more down to frustration for them really not taking teams to the sword so to speak. Some of the football they play is very good but it's seemingly only in 20 minutes spells :)

In what games then?

err tonights game, most of our games this season infact. you'll be hard pushed for better entertainment.

anyone who thinks adebayor was offside or used his arm must be called howard webb or whoever the clueless assistant was. gallas was onside too. another official decision robbing us of a goal.

we kept mata quiet for long periods but bale just didn't get wide enough for large periods. sandro had a really good game, BAE had a shocker and seems to be complacent at times.

I think you misunderstand unless of course you think entertainment = Spurs played well.

For what it's worth I don't think tonight's game was particularly entertaining either.

Say what you want about Terry, that is top defending.

Still an ass though.

Top defending, except he was 6-7 yards deeper than the rest of his defence which played Adebayor on in the first place...... so actually very poor defending and got lucky to get the block in, helped by how wide Ade was and that he didn't curl it into the top corner or blast it but hit it relatively softly.

PRetty rubbish game in terms of quality, Spurs couldn't do anything with the ball in the final third, VDV has been completely rubbish this year. Bale, rubbish, completely, constantly held onto the ball when he should have passed and he made Adebayor almost look good when controlling the ball, the amount of times a touch from either of those two ended up 5 metres away and a Chelsea counter attack was ridiculous.

Ekotto consistently did okay when he got the ball, often went inside, had options to pass in midfield of forward and repeatedly having beaten his man, turned back, went wide and cut off every single option except knocking it long down the wing with almost no margin for error. How many times can you do that in a game before you take the simple early pass instead.

Chelsea, meh, Ramires is cack, missed sitters, fouled stupidly, some woeful passing and was mostly very very easily gone around in midfield. Yeah he ALMOST looks effective and gets in the right place in the box often, but he fluffs it and to be that far forward at the right time, he leaves Chelsea completely exposed, Lampard gets in those positions and he scores more often than not, Ramires gets there, and fluffs it time and time again.

Adebayor was probably lucky to be on the field by the end, his yellow was harsh but it was early and Webb let him get away with a stupid number of simple fouls and a couple not great ones, he had already gotten away with 3-4 after the yellow card when he caught Terry, while he made a meal of it, it was a clear second yellow by that point.

Webb, was atrocious, missed foul after foul after foul and gave lots of fouls for absolutely nothing at all.

Gallas/Ade were both on, not sure if it should have been disallowed for being more arm than shoulder though.

Ekotto, arguably, cost you 2 points today; that's why no one rates him. Spurs fans recently been talking of him in the same breath as Cole, Baines etc. is just embarrassing, how can you just stop paying attention, all you have to do all week is follow the chap in blue on your side for 90 minutes...

he's too hot and cold. complacent in his lb position. he was walking for the goal, only started running once he realised the player had ran past him! he did put in a decent shift at times but he's done this kind of thing too often. king often had to go out wide because of his slackness at times.

Really can't say I've been impressed with Spurs this season, they're far too (for want of a better word) flippant with possession, even against Liverpool it was only until they went down to 9 men that Spurs really turned the screw. Against Arsenal I feel they were fortunate to win, unconvincing tonight against Chelsea and in the other game I've seen of there's recently against a truly dire Villa side they didn't even take the opportunity to make a statement then either.
I'd be really interested to see their pass and chance completion rate because I'd bet it shocking.

They've still got an issue up front, Pavlyuchenko I've got no idea why he's still at the club, Defoe is just meh these days and Adebarndoor simply should not be a top 4 side's main centre forward.

Credit to them though in some regard though they've obviously got where they are in the league at the moment without coming out of 3rd gear and that's a sign of a good side, would just be nice to see them really put in a performance one week.

Clearly you havent seen much football this season then. Even Sir Alex has stated that Spurs, in the last 10 games have played the best football he has seen all season from anyone.

Taken from the SS website for todays game alone, are pass success rate throughout was 86%, greater than Chelsea's out of the 457 passes we attempted (almost 100 more than Chelsea). Not to mention having greater possession.

Just to compare to United yesterday, they only had 88% success rate in a game they strolled against lesser opposition, and to Arsenal who only had 81%.

Also, according to Opta Stats only Bolton 57% and Man Utd 54% have a better shot success rate than Spurs 53% this season. Kinda puts paid to your argument really.

no offence but how do passing and success rate relate in any way to quality of football, especially when the latter stat is topped by Bolton :p

Kinda puts paid to your argument really.

Interesting stats but it doesn't really, 1- because the games that I've mentioned I ended up thinking after everyone that Spurs should have scored more than they did and stats won't change my mind about that and 2- what your stats don't show is chance completion i.e. openings that Spurs have created and then ultimately scored from (I'm not sure if such a thing can even be measured mind you)

Put it another way Spurs have only scored 4 goals in the league once this season, against 9 man Liverpool. Do you not think that the football Spurs' are capable of playing should have wielded more goals that it has? Spurs have also scored less goals than both Arsenal and Chelsea despite having imo a far better squad/starting XI

i can't remember if you're a united fan or not but i was going to ask this anyway. how many 1-0 victories have united had so far this season and had last season when they won the title?

To answer your question though the difference is when United win 1-0 9 times out of 10 it's because we haven't played well. My criticsm of Spurs isn't that they're not playing well (so to speak) but that they're playing with far too much complacency

When Untied win 1-0 I'm relieved because it usually means we've scraped another win when I watch Spurs though I'm frustrated that they've won a game 2-0 when they should have scored 4 or 5.

Maybe I expect more from Spurs than I should?

I think his point is more to do with entertainment and quality of football than the actual result.

Quality of football yes. The football Spurs are capable of playing should see them batter sides. I guess ultimately I want to see them develop a killer instinct like all the top sides have

The thing with Spurs though is that they're currently the third best side in the league without question for me and because they don't have that killer instinct that's why they frustrate me so much
