The foul, such as it was, was made while Kane was attempting to play the ball. therefore, by that definition the offside should have been given.
On the subject of the Mustafi foul, it's the sort of contact that happens in the box frequently. In yesterday's match there was a near identical one on Koscielny which went unpunished. Possibly because Kos didn't throw himself to the ground with arms spread wide

kane got a slight touch and then dived. a pen was given, even though he was offside is the buildup.
It just shows the more you cheat and throw yourself about the more likely you are to get a penalty or freekick.
The refereeing in that was was appalling, so many mistakes and wrong things given.

Makes sense, Firmino is going to play an integral role on the run in, can understand trying not to risk him at this stage. I'm nervous about this one tbh.
