Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [20th - 24th April 2012]

Grow up ;)

It's the weekend football thread.

Yep, if you want to discuss the play off's in League one and their fixtures make a thread, I'll be happy to contribute.

Other then the results, that (the fight / run in for the play offs) isn't to do with this weekend's football.

Oh the joys having you around these parts.

Yes what it tells me is that players like Cabaye are okay for sides like Newcastle whereas the top clubs need players who actually have the ability control games in the midfield.

Seriously, how did Giggs and Carrick controlling the midfield go for you against Newcastle..... oh wait. Again touching the ball a lot does NOT equal control, or quality, in fact, when your two central midfielders touch the ball loads and you lose and your players upfront aren't getting the ball enough it suggests something to me.

Cabaye found a way to get the ball to his front men, who scored, and your midfielders could not find a way through, so passed sideways... and lost.

Actually lets have a guess, who had more passes, more successful passes, and more key passes against Utd this season, Cabaye who has won 3-0, or Modric who lost both games to Utd?

As a Stoke fan I'm rather envious of Newcastle, what a great season, just goes to show the benefits of a good scouting system and a manager who is willing to take chances. Pulis on the other hand, christ it's getting repetitive. Some rather worrying stats bounding about on Stokes season. I think Pulis' stubbornness and unwillingness to evolve could well mean that we're going to really struggle next season.

Some players are just more effective (for want of a better term) than others. Cabaye seemingly scores more goals but the stats say he's not nearly involved as much in the game as Modric is. This says to me there's a bigger chance of games simply passing Cabaye by (lol) whereas Modric makes himself involved a trait which makes him a better fit for the top sides and a better player overall imo

So a player who is more effective isn't as good a fit as a player who gets involved but doesn't contribute as much to a result :confused::confused:

No wonder Newcastle are breaking into the top 4 if that's what top clubs want from players :D but all the better for us if you take the well renowned show ponies and we keep the game changers!

Great atmosphere at the Amex today. It would have been a travesty if we lost that game!

Just a shame we had nothing to play for though. Birmingham should be safe in the playoffs now, though I hope Blackpool go up personally.

Blackpool will go up I reckon.

And being in the top 6 Newcastle does not count as a top club??

Not compared to those that consistently finish top 4/5 season after season no. Put Newcastle at home against Barcelona like Chelsea were last Wednesday night and Barcelona would have raked up a cricket score.

Newcastle are having a good season, a good season which has coincided with Chelsea being poor (for the most part) and Spurs running into calamitous run of form. If Newcastle finish 4th then they'll deserve to have done so and over the course of the season they'll have been better than whoever they finish above that alone doesn't make them a top side though not unless they repeat it year after year.

You can't be sure of that. They can have an off day like agaisnt chelsea.

Glad I came straight home(not just because I feel terrible), the QPR/Spurs game is gonna be great

Blackburn win, Wigan lose plus Newcastle win is a perfect set up!

Of course not, the top clubs don't carry players (certainly in midfield) who have an inability to get involved in the passage of play on the off chance that they may or may not crack one in from 30 yards on a very rare occasion

Cabaye has made a total of 1210 passes with 928 of those being successful
Modric has made a total of 2111 passes with 1812 of those being successful

That's almost 1000 more in both categories in Modric's favour. I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to even suggest that the two players are close in terms of ability and influence on the pitch. I wouldn't mind but before today Cabaye's seemingly more effectiveness equalled 1 goal less (1 goal more now) and 1 more assist (2 more now if he got an assist today) in the PL so there's hardly a landslide in Cabaye's favour there either :o
