He's come out and said we don't need a defensive coach and this stubbornness is hurting us. I don't think bringing in a defensive coach would fix all the problems but there has to be some improvement...
It's not as simple as having a defensive coach. It's about finding the balance between attack and defence too. Last season we went all out attack and it worked. Contrary to popular belief our defence didn't cost us the title last season - practically every game where we shipped 3+ goals we still won. The failure was pure and simply down to not being able to break down Chelsea. The only game where you could pin the result on the defence letting the rest of the side down was Palace away but that was a direct consequence of us chasing more goals. Had we not needed to win by 6 or 7 we'd have seen that game out.
The criticism of the defence seems to have scared Rodgers and he's constantly chopping and changing the way we play to find a solution but he's failing. We've tried playing with a 2 man midfield which hasn't worked - our CM's simply aren't capable of sitting deep and dominating games and it brings out the worst in Gerrard and Henderson.
Today was probably the best example though of how lost we are. We've gone with a diamond in midfield (with Sterling up front which is another story) but then played a defensive RB and Johnson at LB, meaning he won't get forward much either. You cannot play a diamond without fullbacks pushing forwards. If he wanted our fullbacks to stay back then he had to play a different system.
There's too many compromises lately. Rodgers needs to find his balls again and set the side up how he knows best.
