Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [23 - 25th February 2013]

Meh, my take on Bale is the same thing I sensibly said when every Utd fan on here was banging on about Nani being the best player in the league. As with Nani, being good for a few months doesn't make a player fantastic. Bale showed promise and some great games last year, and the year before, but this is his first and only season being at this level consistently

Last year he got 9 goals and 10 assists, this year its 15 goals 1 assist, he's scoring more but he's clearly assisting less.

He's scoring more but has he been involved in the scoring of less goals at the same point last season, I don't know. He scored less while shooting more last season, his shooting has certainly improved, he is an improved player this year.

Ronaldo/Messi have scored 3-4 times what Bale has this season, EVERY year for several years. Nani had one great season, but then went backwards, or should I say, back to what I think is his usual form.

He's VERY good right now, but best player in the league, no, one of the best around long term... look at every other player who had one great season.... FAR too early to say that, specifically at least 18 months too early for that.

He's not scared to shoot, he has awesome pace and huge power(when he chooses to not go over as if he were built like a 7 year old girl that is :p ), and this year he's shooting at the right moments and he's directing his power more, last year those shots got close to goal but he missed a crapload, this year there is definitely more technique and more control of his shooting.

Maybe more importantly, at the same time last season(f365 do it by date) Spurs had played 25 games, scored 49, conceded 25 and had 53 points while being in third. This year Spurs have played 27 games, scored 47 goals, conceded 32, and have 51 points, despite playing two games more.
Is the team focusing on Bale and him being in a free role helping him but hurting the team, because thats what happened last year when Bale moved into a free role?

Who have they played in the past 9 games, won 6 against Villa, Sunderland, REading, Newcastle, West ham and West Brom. West Brom had won 2 in their previous 11, none in their previous 5 games, most of them in terrible form and/or just crap.

With Bale in this form you still dropped points against QPR and Norwich, the other 6 games you'd expect points from if not all of them, Utd being pretty much the only team in that 9 games you wouldn't be disappointed not to take 3 points from.

9 of Bales 15 goals came in that run against 9 teams, mostly in terrible form, and Spurs have one of, if not the worst run ins of anyone in the league, Arsenal Liverpool, Swansea, Everton, Chelsea, City, Stoke(away) and a couple teams fighting for relegation.

One player can score 10 goals, evenly throughout the season, another might score against the same teams but by fluke those 10 games are almost all in a 1-2 month period and it can look like a player is doing vastly better, despite getting the same 10 goals against the same teams. Fixture lists are like that.

Its a tad unfair, he's scored some great goals, and some like LIverpool/Utd/West Brom were the difference between 3 points or not. But ultimately a player needs to be great throughout a whole season and beyond just one season to be a great player, a favourable fixture list and a great run over 2 months is not much more than that.... yet.

I.... I agree with DM?!?!??!?!

He's good, playing great but he has to do it consistently to be a top player. I just keep having images of him at ManU replacing Giggs.

Last year Spurs had an Modric, Van der Vaart and an in-form Adebayor. Spurs had a better team last year and better attacking options. Bale could stay on the left, get double or triple marked and let the other players do the damage. Spurs don't have those other threats anymore. AVB has done the sensible thing by giving Bale a free-role. It makes it harder for teams to mark him out of the game.

Who's Bale supposed to be assisting this year? Defoe isn't fit and Ade missed another couple of sitters last night. It's also worth pointing out that Bale has 21 goals and 4 assists in all competitions.

That being said, I hope giggsy has a word with him and helps get him to old trafford ;)

Given the "frosty" atmosphere between Levy and Utd in regards to a certain left back, Im not sure that will happen (even if Utd were willing to pay the sky-high price Bale will undoubtedly be if/when he leaves)

Ronaldo is also around 6 years older than Bale - while he has been fantastic last 4/5 years, it was only at about Bale's current age where Ronaldo really started to get consistant.

(Surely the loss of VdeV and Defoe being in and out has hurt Spurs stats as a whole this season compared to last?) -edit of course Modric as well, given his tactical position a lot of the time would help cut down those goals against as well

Wonder where Man Utd would be in the league this year without RVP and his goals.

Wonder where Liverpool would be in the league this year without Suarez and his goals.

Wonder where Swansea would be in the league this year without Michu and his goals.

*etc* :p

no mention of arsenal as we are no longer a one man team :) infact we have 3 players who have scored over 10 goals for us this season so far.

He's a very quick player with an awesome shot but world class? I don't think so. I don't recall him getting all these plaudits before christmas. It takes more a than a good few months to be called world class surely.

Who is gonna assist? You are better of taking a 40yard shot than passing to Ade:p

Anyway a lack of assists mean nothing, it is a useless stat in that regards. You are relying on other players to score for you. You could run past all 11 players then pass to someone who is 1 yard out and you get nothing if he misses!

I reckon Bales goal last night was Goal of the Season so far for me.

As long as Spurs get in the top 4 he will stay, until they don't. He seems a very level headed guy, has seen what has happened to Berbatov/Modric when they pushed to leave to further their careers, and seems to be very well advised. It's surprised me that the older players who have actually played abroad seem to be telling him to stay put, while everyone else tells him to go. Hopefully he'll take note of that and Spurs can build a title challenging team around him while he's playing his best football. I also don't think he's a worldy yet. He's very good and has the potential to be one of the best, but he needs another season or two at this level to prove it to me.

As for last night, Lloris was superb, and was glad to see Sigurdsson score, hopefully that'll give him a boost and he'll come back into form, seeing him chip in with a few goals before the end of the season would be perfect.

mata is a class act, RVP is now banging them in after a slow start, suarez is quite simply too good for liverpool. none are as exciting or entertaining as bale.

I'm not even sure what that sentence is supposed to mean

I thought RVP had slowed down scoring now has he not, after a good start?

Suarez isn't too good for Liverpool, no player is too good for anywhere, except maybe stoke.

Last part entirely subjective, Suarez is one of the most entertaining players to watch I've ever seen, the only other player I'd probably watch a match just to see is Ronaldo.
