Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 6th February 2018]

Surely the offside rule can't be that if an opposition player touches it you're no longer offside? If that's the case then a deflection off a player would make you onside, which seems mental to me. Lovren was clearly falling over as he tried to clear it, seems very harsh.

Regards the second penalty, I can kind of see what Liverpool fans are on about it if you slow it down, but even then only really from the second angle. In real time I thought it was a pen, so I can see why the linesman flagged.

Yep really pathetic that no one at Sky is aware of the rules or willing to call out a clearly incompetent set of officials.

Honestly Moss should read the rule book and stop hanging out at Greggs

The first one is definitely not a penalty, dive and offside regardless of Lovren's touch (doesn't it have to be intentional?).

2nd one I keep changing my mind about but reading the laws it has to be a penalty. VVD has kicked him in the back of the knee, and as much as I wouldn't want to give it because of the reaction and dive it is a penalty. One of the softest I've seen.

Liverpool can't really complain though, you can't just sit back and wait for a counter against a team that plays good possession football and has a great defence. Vert did really well to snuff out a few Liverpool counters. NLD is going to be interesting, we play similar to how Liverpool played today (with greater possession though) but who knows what will happen on the day. A win at Wembley and we're a point behind them.

Second one

Lamela not trying to get the ball, just impede VVD trying to play it

VVD has pulled back

He’s narrowly offside

I've explained. VVD tries to clear it, sees the player coming in and pulls out of the challenge as much as he can. Lamela makes no attempt to get the ball and simply barges into VVD and then poleaxes himself to the ground.

So you agree he hasn't pulled out enough, ergo it's a foul. Lemela has every right to put his body between the ball and the defending player.

It's the same argument as 'I was trying to get the ball ref' ... so what, it's still a foul.

We could sit here and argue whether it's enough contact to send him down, i'd have to agree it's probably not but in todays day and age someone will throw themselves on the ground with the slightest of touches, it is what it is.

Bit harsh giving Karius grief for the first goal, 99/100 (probably more) Wanyama puts that into row z..... sometimes you have to give credit to the strike, yes he could try and catch it but it wasn't an easy one.

I was more annoyed at can tbh. Comes out to him and he just kinda caughs it up in the middle of the field.

Yeah it was weak, I think Ox could've maybe tried getting there as well?

I wonder if they'd ever consider implementing more serious punishments than a simple yellow for repeat offenders.

For diving? For the likes of the Alli one i'd be all for it. That's some of the worst cheating in the game imo, yellow cards here and there are never going to be enough to stamp it out.

You never see Liverpool do that...LOL

We just need to admit most footballers are cheating scum, and the problem needs tackling. In addition to swarming the referees.

Fair call out. (Especially with Salah and Mane recently)

However 3 in 20 minutes is really pathetic and a coaching trait it would appear, when Spurs choked the title and tried to end careers of every player they faced for the rest of that season I question whether I liked Poch, but after today he seems to endorse his players being vile.

Yeah. I'd be curious as to who has actually got multiple cards for diving this season.

I agreed with Alan Shearer on MOTD last night that they should be able to retrospectively ban a player for diving even if the ref has given a yellow. I get that they don't want to undermine the officials, but they need to do something to stamp out diving. Professional players go down way, way too easily a lot of the time, it's endemic. I remember the Times ran a 'dive of the week' column around the time that Drogba and Ronaldo were particularly bad for it and that caused the FA to clamp down on it a bit.

I can only think that professional players either realise that going down is the best way to get a decision or they're actively encouraged to go down by coaches. It's never something I've witnessed in amateur football so it must be something in the culture or that they're being taught about.
