Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 6th February 2018]

Don't get me wrong, Lamela definitely over-inflated the contact and someone at the club needs to sit down with him and Dele Alli and have some words with them. But it's always the case that people rarely mind when it goes your way. Historically Liverpool have been one of the worst teams for persistently diving. Suarez immediately springs to mind. I'm in no way condoning it, in fact i hate that in the last few seasons we have jumped on the bandwagon of being a diving team like most of the top half of the table. But unfortunately it's a part of the game and every team does it now.

We will always be arguing that players have dived. But if we are all honest, it's easier to take when it's your team and the decision goes your way.

Again, not condoning it, but the Kane penalty and Lamela penalty were both technically correct by the letter of the law. Lamela completely over-reacted, Kane possibly so. Dele's though was just laughable. Though that's his party trick this season.

The funny thing is no one has issue with the fact Lamela is running into VVD and not actually trying to play the ball. He has no control or possession of the ball so he certainly isn't just 'shielding' it. Not unlike Calvert-Lewin's dive yesterday.
to top it off I think lamella is actually favourite to win the ball if he actually wants to but his touch would take him away from goal so he's decided to jump in front of vvd instead.

Yep it was a penalty earnt for sure.

It's still a foul though. He kicked him straight in the back of the leg. It's a foul all day long.

From what I’ve seen of the replays and the gif above, it doesn’t seem like VVD kicked him in the leg...
he does, its just not very hard. he's already started to pull his leg back so it just kind of jabs his leg. Can see why you would be confused though because the force of the kick isn't enough to move his leg.

You can see the way VvD's leg recoils that there is contact?

I would love to see it again from another angle tbh. I don't doubt that you are calling it as you see it.

But for me, and yes that clip. It's a foul.

I still don’t see it  what I do see is Lamela clutching his leg as if he has taken a bullet there.

I don’t know, I just don’t see any contact whatsoever from VVD at all.

Obviously a different angle may shed more light but I don’t see any other angle so far.

you need to get your eyes checked if you think there's no contact there

lamelas entitled to go down and as we've seen (winks) getting clipped in the box and not going down and not getting a pen, that's what's required

wreckless from vvd and he's paid the price

VvD does touch Lamela, and to the ref/linesman I can see why it would look like he's hit him with some force too. Yes he goes down like he's been shot but that's not unusual these days.

I'
I still have no idea how the **** head of a ref gave the first penalty when he had no idea.

What a travesty of an ending.
I'm pretty sure from the tv coverage the ref gave the penalty right away for the keeper catching Kane, the linesman then flagged it as offside. The ref however said that the ball was last played by the Liverpool player and so Kane was actually onside by the letter of the law. Hence the penalty stood.

I had to go out straight after FT so I've not seen any of the replays or post match analysis. First pen was clearly offside and why the lino doesn't flag I'll never know seeing as he acknowledges that Kane was in an offside position. The 2nd pen I initially thought it was careless from VVD but looking at the replays on here, it looks more and more like your modern dive where the attacker runs into the defender to make the contact.

As for our performances. I've seen a few people complain about our tactics after going 1-0 up but there was nothing wrong with our tactics - we restricted Spurs to next to nothing for an hour and we could have easily scored another 2 or 3 on the break but unfortunately our counter attacking was the worst I've ever seen under Klopp. The tactics worked but we didn't finish the opportunities we created and that's why we're talking about a 2-2 rather than a comfortable 3-0 win.

By my calculations Chelsea have 4 hard games left, Liverpool 2 (3 if you think Everton are hard ) and Spurs 3.

Arsenal have 3.

I haven't counted Leicester as a big game for any club. So you could add one to those teams still to play Leicester.

The penalty was given as a Liverpool player played the ball last. Apparently by the rule book that means that Kane is deemed onside.
I don't have any problems with Liverpool's defensive tactics, it was definitely frustrating us. But for the whole of the 2nd half we were knocking on the door and if we'd put away our clear cut chances we should have scored 2 or even before Wanyama's rocket.

All in all, the draw was probably fair.

i'll be honest I cant remember any clear cut chances. I remember a couple kane shots that we ruled offside and one poor effort in the first half but not much else honestly. same for Liverpool it was a very quiet game for keepers in general.

I don't remember a Liverpool player playing the ball tbh. As far as I can tell from the radio (after the event and cannot find clips!) it was an attack which a pool player touched. After that was that dive.

Not seen it back yet though so we'll see.

Second pen though was a pen. It's not even worth debating really.

If there's any truth in that first point then the offside rule is even more *******s than I thought. Lovren doesn't 'play the ball', he's tried to block/clear a through ball to Kane who's offside - I've seen 100's of examples when a player has been in an offside position and the ball's come to them as a result of a deflection only for them to be flagged offside. Just like with the 2nd pen, it's one that the refs officials will argue either way to defend which ever decision they gave. If they gave it offside then they'll say Lovren hasn't played the ball but if they don't they'll point to the fact it skims off his foot. And with the pen if they don't give it they'll point to Lamela running into VVD but if they give it they'll point to the contact.

Not sure what clear chances Spurs created during the game though other than the Son shot. Liverpool had at least 3 opportunities where they had Spurs wide open but our final ball was atrocious. As above, our tactics were fine - the likes of Sanchez and Dier are exactly the types of defensive players we're great at exposing, unfortunately for us this time we wasted so many great chances to do so.

You’re going to see a lot of players jumping into defenders and going over like they’ve been assassinated now expecting penalties.
