Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 7th December 2011]

interesting i haven't read any 'dalglish out' comments yet, yet if it had still been hodgson at the helm, i'm sure there would have been.
Really? We were around third from bottom this time last year and playing the worst football we had ever played. If Hodgson had done a better job on and off the pitch he would've kept his job but he was a complete shambles.

We might not be getting the results under Kenny but we're picking up more points, playing far better football and actually have confidence in our game.

Just because you might catch somebody with a high foot, it doesn't make it a instant red card or else you'll be sending players off for any sort of high footed challenge. You have to take into account the actual challenge not just how the bodies have ended up.

Spearing doesn't jump into the challenge. He's made a side-footed tackle and after striking the ball with his foot at its lowest point, his momentum has meant his right foot has followed through and caught the lad.

I'm not arguing if it was a red or not, I'm disagreeing with your view that it wasn't 'particularly dangerous'. It was dangerous. Whether he meant it to be or not is irrelevant, if Dembele wasn't already mid flight that could have seriously hurt him. He's connected with him above his ankle with his studs, it's dangerous!

Contact made high, off the ground with two feet lunging..definite red:

Don't worry, we'll probably go and lose to Swansea now :p

When a player raises his foot to bring down a dropping ball, if he catches the opposition player with his foot is it dangerous?

If a player jumps into a tackle with his feet off the ground and his full body weight jumping down, that's dangerous. Spearing's caught the lad with his follow through after striking the ball, it's not too dissimilar to when a defender clears the ball and kicks the bottom of the attackers foot, who's trying to block the clearance. It just so happened that rather that kick the bottom of the Fulham lads foot, he's ended up catching him on the shin. It wasn't a challenge that was likely to cause serious injury.

Yeah everyone might aswell stop doing slide tackles.

Well the relevant thing to point out here is, at no point does he slide in that tackle, at all. That's the whole point of a slide tackle, done correctly there is hopefully little/no contact, if you are ON the floor and both your feet are as low as possible, the chances of catching someone on the shin/knee whatever are extremely low, its when you jump in and can't control the height.

Again, twaddle, take a normal person kicking the ball, following through and catching a player...... while still with all their weight on their standing leg, there is only the momentum of the leg, NOT the players body weight and the player is in enough control he can pull his leg away.

Watch what Spearing did again, his momentum didn't just carry his leg into the player, he came COMPLETELY off the ground with his FULL weight and all his momentum pushed into his studs and into the player.

That is what makes it dangerous, not the contact itself the fact that he was clearly not in full control, as he rushed towards another player, with his studs showing.

"must appear like a lunge" is no where in the rule book, dangerous, reckless and intent are, any ONE of the three is cause for a red card at the ref's discretion, that tackle was incredibly reckless, very dangerous, but no intent, its still a red card.

I didn't watch the game but that challenge is horrendous, you can't go in at that pace and not get 100% ball or someone is going to get hurt. Not sure how even with the rosiest of tinted glasses that's not a red.
