Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 7th December 2011]

Baz, if you can't see how that tackle was dangerous it's probably pointless to carry on, malicious intent or total freak accident, the tackle ended up being dangerous. Studs up on the shin/ankle with that sort of momentum (and completely out of control of his body due to sliding) is more often than not nasty, we've seen it so many times before.

I didn't watch the game but that challenge is horrendous, you can't go in at that pace and not get 100% ball or someone is going to get hurt. Not sure how even with the rosiest of tinted glasses that's not a red.

He did get 100% of the ball though

And have you watched the video or just the stills above? Also, even Utd fans have said it's harsh, so it's got to be at least debatable.

If Spearing's weight was on it's way down into the challenge, then I'd agree. It's not though. He's won the ball and whatever force left in the challenge is on it's way up. He's not going to cause a serious injury with that challenge.

When a player raises his foot to bring down a dropping ball, if he catches the opposition player with his foot is it dangerous?

It depends where he catches him I guess. If he catches him in the face then yes, it is dangerous.

If a player jumps into a tackle with his feet off the ground and his full body weight jumping down, that's dangerous. Spearing's caught the lad with his follow through after striking the ball, it's not too dissimilar to when a defender clears the ball and kicks the bottom of the attackers foot, who's trying to block the clearance. It just so happened that rather that kick the bottom of the Fulham lads foot, he's ended up catching him on the shin. It wasn't a challenge that was likely to cause serious injury.

It's irrelevant what Spearing was doing, the tackle was dangerous, his foot is making contact just shy of the knee, a potential leg breaker. The rules are quite clear on the fact the lunging in with feet off the ground and studs showing will get you sent off.

In addition to this, love the Liverpool players surrounding, pushing and shouting into the face of the referee.....turning into Chelsea a little now.

Really?

If the left foot of the Fulham player is seriously grounded and he makes no effort to avoid the challenge he would have been leaving the stadium in an ambulance.

Pointless to carry on then :p I've seen fouls very similar to that one end up in tears, I don't need to remind you but when Shawcross caught Ramsey he was on the way up too from the peak power of his swing, still plenty of force to break a bone

i've watched the video too. it was a red, i stated my opinion on it a few posts down from the vid. cannot do that these days, dalglish may say it's harsh but he should be tearing the player a new one in the dressing room.

He didn't lunge though. He comes in and makes a side footed tackle and the momentum of his follow through brings his legs off the ground.

As for the surrounding of the ref. You're a Spurs fan, correct? Take a look at Adam's sending off earlier in the season ;)

That was a freak injury and Shawcross shouldn't have been sent off though

I remember Milan Baros getting a broken ankle from a fair tackle from Markus Babbel. These things happen.

There wasn't enough force in Spearing's challenge to make it likely that the Fulham player would get injured.

What? Bale telling the referee that he has already been booked? Thats different to players running 40/50 yards to jump into the referees face, take a long hard look at Skrtel's reaction.

As for not lunging, look at the still above incase the live video footage is too fast for you, both his feet are off the ground in that and no aspect of his anatomy is on the ground, a clear lunge.

oh yeh, another blatant red. the reaction was of such high feeling because adam almost put bale in a chair for wolves the season before. obviously didn't learn his lesson.

He's not going to cause a serious injury with that challenge.

Kevin Davies tackle on Cleverly didn't look like one that would cause serious injury, that was in September and bar 90 minutes of football since he's still suffering with the ligament damage today

I still think the Red was slightly harsh because Spearing did win the ball but it's impossible to say that he couldn't of caused injury with the follow through

That is dangerous, could have done serious damage if the circumstances were an inch different. It wasn't a lunge but ended up looking like one. If Dembele is not stood at an angle on the outside of his foot, his studs would be in the ground and that's goodnight leg. So lucky.

About the offside, discussing it with a ref and Liverpool fan elsewhere, he said Suarez is offside (his arm), I posted back saying isn't it any part of your body you can score with (i.e. his arm can't be offside), he posted back saying the rule doesn't state this and it's any part of your body, making Suarez's arm offside, does anybody else know the rule?

What? The ref wasn't going to even book Adam (although he should have) until Bale and a few other Spurs players surrounded him. That's very different to telling the ref he's already been booked. The ref would have had to shown him the booking for Bale to remind him that he's already been booked.

Rather than look at the still, look at the video. If you're 'lunging' then your body weight is going down into the tackle. Spearing's legs are on their way up when he makes contact. How can he lunge upwards?

At first I thought it was a bit of a harsh red. Your eyes are drawn to his trailing leg, and he doesn't really make any contact with that, it's just an oddly unnatural movement.

But watch again, and follow the front leg, and it goes right on to the ankle. Both legs are off the ground, he's no way of stopping his momentum, and it's only due to the Fulham player jumping clear that nothing nasty happened.

Definite red, stupid tackle.

Even Joey Barton said it should have only been a yellow :p

Does someone want to zoom even further in on that still? I'm still blind..
