Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th Mar - 2nd April 2012]

I thought the performance was fairly poor overall and only started to pick up past the hour mark. It certainly didn't strike me as anything special.

In a back handed compliment kind of way, DM is right it was an average performance. Average performances, week in week out win you Premierships, that's all that matters ;)

How supporters of the other 19 teams in the league wish their team was as average as us :D

Just been mega busy with work.

For your return, have some pie :D

That's my favourite kind! Thank you :).

I was speaking with a Liverpool fan at football last week and he couldn't believe that a potential record breaking Man Utd team are being classed as "average", it's ridiculous. We've put more workmanlike performances in than normal and made hard work of some games, but given the ridiculous injuries we've had what we've done is hardly "average".

Yep the fact that we 'could' break the points total for the PL in a year where the standard is far higher than when Chelsea achieved it is nothing short of remarkable tbh, you only have to look back at just how bad we were back in 2004, Arsenal's invincible's were basically a wreck after losing their unbeaten run early in the season and the likes of Liverpool, City & Spurs were nowhere back then.

It feels good to be so average :D

ASide from the several really really bad passes that led directly to dangerous attacks, Carrick also did a bunch of other stuff wrong, he repeatedly stepped up to make a tackle or close someone down leaving the side exposed after missing tackles or someone easily going around him as he was going the wrong direction.

His positioning, his timing, offensively, defensively, he was just crap all night long. Banging a hundred passes sideways as the team passed through him from left to right wing doesn't change that. Passing stats are one of many things that make up a performance.

As for Rooney, for someone playing left wing he spent an awful lot of time in the middle with Evra filling in his usual left back role, so around 30metre's further forward at all times than he should be :p Rooney's passing was incredibly uninspiring, failing repeatedly to find the throughballs he wanted, I can't really name a single time he got down the wing, though he found himself on the left side of the box once or twice and put in a crap low cross easily gathered by the keeper when there were 2, maybe 3 players far post.

Also to carry on the Stoke bashing from the weekend a quote from Footie365 which sums up my feelings perfectly.

Stoke
In homage to Stoke's boring, lifeless football, here's a set of stats thrown at you:

* Stoke's goal difference is minus 14 - double the negative total of the teams either side of them in the league.

* They have scored a joint-worst (with Wigan) 29 goals this season.

* They are bottom of the league in terms of possession.

* They are bottom in terms of pass completion.

* They have the lowest number of shots per game.

Why would anyone want to watch this rubbish?

They don't shoot, they don't pass, they don't score, they can't hold on to the ball. I did say before, fair play to them, for a team playing such, anti football they are doing better than the many other teams who play anti football. I just can't see Stoke while playing that kind of football ever being a top team, or at least I can hope that no team ever gets deemed truly successful for playing that way.

Rooney's passing was uninspired? You missed his 40 yard diagonal which lead to our first chance of the game? As for his positioning, you're not the manager so why question him doing anything other than the job he was set out there to do? When attacks broke down he was always busting a gut to get behind the ball and support Evra and I'm sure that's the only thing he was tasked with by playing out there not to be running down the flank putting crosses in.

Where did I say he had to stay left wing, Utd fans(fans in general) have a habit of defending a point I never made while ignoring the points they made. I was RESPONDING to someone saying Rooney not being as influencial was hardly surprising as he played on the wing, yet the vast majority of the game he actually wasn't, he was in the middle in his usual position.

Likewise, one pass an inspired performance does not make, EVER, notice I used the plural passING not pass, I didn't claim he didn't make a single good pass. He did however try balls through the middle, in behind and fluffed basically all of them... as per usual.

Tough away game tonight agaisnt Burnley. Its gonna be a difficult game so a draw might not be a bad result. I don't think we can get into the automatic places, so staying in the playoff places is important. I'm gonna call it 1-1, a win will have me smiling all week !!!

It worked one time and then after he repeatedly went for hollywood passes stopped as the defenders were cutting them out.

If you were replying to someone in general then quote them, otherwise you come across as just having another rant

And you may not have said he didn't make a single good pass but you did say his passing was uninspired whereas the truth is at times he kept it simple, at times he sprayed it over to the right for Valencia and at times he tried to play it over the top/through the middle for Hernandez, that's plenty of variation which could be argued as being inspired. An uninspired performance or in this case passing could be trying the same thing over and over again (like Scholes to Valencia for example)

Tom84, you are in the minority and incorrect. you were far from convincing and played some turgid stuff (other united fans in here said so too) i don't see why you don't just say it? it'd make life even sweeter, surely, knowing you've played gash, for well over a year now and it's mentality that's got you through and belief over city's mega bucks.

or you could just post a gif of rooneys 40yd pass that gave you your first chance?

for shamikebab's faults, he's probably the most grounded united fan in here.
