Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [4th - 8th March 2016]

And completely agree re the pen. I've banged on about it for years. Why should an attacker stay on his feet and penalise himself when he's been tripped?

And sadly this is the problem with football, fans defend their own players cheating. It's absolutely disgusting.

lol

I've been consistent with this line for years regardless of who involved. I've even defended Wayne ****ing Rooney for doing the same.

I've always said that if a player is tripped then they have every right to go to ground because you can guarantee that 99 times out of 100 refs will not award a pen unless the player goes down.

Absolutely, I can't wait for strikers to be starfishing to the ground when a defender dares to brush their hand against their shirt. It's all fine though, it's just 'helping' the referee.

Not a liverpool fan - I think that was a pen, yes he tried to pull out of the tackle but it doesn't change the fact he DID make contact.

There was absolutely no reason to go to ground and risk that, Palace fans should be upset at the stupidity of the tackle, not the fact Benteke went to ground when he was caught.

He doesn't plant his left foot at all

Whether he could have stayed up or not is irrelevant too. He was tripped, it's a foul, it's a pen. Why do people keep believing that the attacking player's reaction/fall etc matters? it's what the defensive player does that determines whether something is a foul or not and again, Dellaney tripped Benteke - it's a pen.

Right foot, I was talking from the perspective of the video.

There's a difference between a defender sliding into a challenge and tripping the attacker and their hand brushing against the attackers shirt. Lets not be silly now.

As for helping the ref. It's actually partly the officials fault. If refs gave fouls for challenges rather than the reaction of the attacker then players wouldn't need to go to ground.

You've always been wrong as well. If the contact is more than enough to cause you to go down it's fine to not fight hard to stay up. It's also fine to go down if a tackle significantly alters your stride, slows you, prevents you getting to the ball. This is the problem, the minor contact was adjusted and gone before his next step. It was his 'right foot' which planted then didn't support his weight because he choose to stop running and go down. THe contact wasn't enough to slow him, to cause him to go down, to prevent him getting to the ball(as in it made no difference, if someone makes a poor touch it's not suddenly okay to dive because of inconsequential contact).

If a player with no contact is running along and just choose not to push through on one leg, not to bring the other through behind him and go down, it's a dive. If you do that after a contact it's still a dive. It's entirely different to contact which significantly alters your stride and in fighting to stay up you will slow down and lose control of the ball.

Actually, seeing it again there is clearly contact.

Link.

Pause it after the contact, or run it at half speed. The contact wobbles his leg but it's adjusted for after a split second. Look at his right stride/gait, it's all perfectly fine. He starts going down over his right leg, look at his foot. He puts it down then lifts it up, bends his leg and go over.

the contact was incredibly minor and didn't have anywhere near enough effect to have effected him at all going forwards.

It's a slippery slope. Much like how claiming for freekicks and stuff turned into people claiming for referees to give cards out. 'tripping' is a very lose term to use. There is contact but if we give a penalty for every time a defender makes any contact with an attacker then there is 15 penalties a game. He tries to pull out of the challenge, makes the slightest contact with him (I had to watch the replay 3 times to even see it) then the striker cheats and dives to the ground.

You've always been wrong as well. ....

Thanks :p

Again, what Benteke does after the challenge is made has no relevance whatsoever. Whether Benteke's ankle snaps or whether he's completely unaffected, that does not change what Delaney done. It's Delaney's action that determines whether it's a foul or not.

Delaney slid in and trips Benteke. Regardless of what Benteke does next doesn't change what happened. It's a foul.

The contact altered his run, was enough to 'put him off'. It was a penalty.

There are two issues here; firstly is there enough contact to result in a foul? Yes, absolutely. Secondly; the manner in which Benteke went 'down', if referee's where better and did their jobs properly - players would not need to exaggerate contact or go down 'easily'.

It was a penalty. Fans of 'rival' or other clubs denying this are just bias, they would be claiming a penalty if the situation had happened to their forward.

Delaney slides into a challenge, gets no where near the ball and catches Benteke. How can that not be a foul?

You can say it's harsh, you can criticise Benteke for not trying his best to stay up but that doesn't change what Delaney done. I can honestly say if I was a Palace fan I'd be fuming but I'd be fuming at Delaney for making a ridiculous tackle.

"not doing his best to stay up" Seriously? He 100% dives pure and simple, the cheating culture in football is disgusting and it's sad to see how much it has spread to fans and commentators as well.

Thanks :p

that's entirely the silliest thing I've seen you say.

Trip
catch one's foot on something and stumble or fall

Benteke threw himself down... had he not done so you couldn't have said he fell or stumbled... as such what Benteke did afterwards has absolutely everything to do with it.

Had he kept running in no way could you define what Delaney did as a trip... because it literally wasn't a trip. Benteke chose to let his leg go out from under him as he stepped, what Delaney did had no effect on this. Delaney did NOT trip him precisely because Benteke did not stumble or fall as a result of that contact.
