Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 11th May 2015]

Hey, I'm not saying he's very good :p
Every time I've watched Man.U this season their game has been built around him so 2nd best player might be stretching it a bit, 2nd MVP might be more fitting?
When we played them the other week we apparently focused in training all week on how to nullify him and the crosses to him, that worked and he was ineffective. If he wasn't that important JM wouldn'thave built his plans around him.
Whatever, I don't think Man.U. would be 4th without him.

We won 4 games on the trot including City, Liverpool and Tottenham and its no coincidence that Carrick was playing for all of those. We didn't have him for the game against you and were were back to the team that struggled against everyone. Even then you needed some luck to beat us. Fellaini is not brilliant, he is just effective at times. A better player would be more effective than he is.

You can't really use those games as an example to disprove what Johnny's said. Nobody could argue that in those run of games your game plan was built around direct football into Fellaini. While losing Carrick wouldn't have helped, an equal if not bigger reason why you were less successful against Chelsea than in the previous games was because Chelsea were not only naturally better equipped to deal with those long balls into Fellaini, they specifically brought in Zouma to mark him as well.

We didn't win those 4 games by playing long balls into Fellaini though so I don't know that the relevance of that is. Carrick doesn't just sit there and play long balls, he moves the ball quickly and relieves pressure on the back four and starts attacks. Without him we are sluggish and predictable.

I didn't say you weren't worse off without Carrick. Your game plan was very much based on getting Fellaini pushed up on the inside left channel, knocking the ball into him and pinning the opposition back though.

We didn't face a chelsea side that nullified the threat of Fellaini. They faced a United side that was just easy to play against. In all the games since Carrick has been injured we haven't played against teams that shut Fellaini down, we have just been rubbish and far too slow to move the ball.

The Chelsea game was no different to any of the games after that. We still should have got something from the Chelsea game playing as badly as we did. Everton were far more effective against us than Chelsea were.

Again, I'm not disagreeing that Utd aren't worse off without Carrick. All I'm saying, and what I think the underlying point of Johnny's posts, is that Fellaini's been an important player to the way Utd have played this season. I think it's obvious that, for whatever reason, Utd have started to almost build their side around Fellaini and his strengths.

I couldn't believe Utd were seriously after him when you first signed him. He's an average footballer and I never believed I'd see a Utd side playing as direct as they have. The situation Utd are in now is completely different to that of 2 seasons ago though. You're in a situation where you've got to just get the best out of what they've got and that involves playing to Fellaini's strengths.

Long term I don't think Fellaini's going to be a big player for Utd but this season he has played a big part in getting you back into the CL. I'd say that Liverpool being rubbish has played a bigger part though.

Carrick is far more important to Utd than Fellaini will ever be

I'd say that Liverpool being rubbish has played a bigger part though.

Just like Utd being rubbish last year was a bigger part of your lot getting into the top four last season

err no this years united wouldnt finish ahead of last years everton nevermind liverpool, like i said LVG would not have got you top 4 last year
and this season Moyes probably would have you close to this points total

We pretty much have CL now but LvG has not convinced me massively this season at all.

As someone else said I'm sure he wouldn't have got fourth this year without everyone else falling apart and the terrible inconsistency. If my club was in anyway a rival for the places united will be fighting for I'd be more than happy they got CL football so they keep hold of LVG. He's going to carry on spending and losing vast sums of money and still play terrible football. The money side doesn't matter united can afford it. FFP is geared up for them so getting fourth in coming years will only get easier.

With the spending power if United got a better manager they would dominate again for years, it's good for us all as neutrals if you keep LVG. Not Moyes/Martinez levels of terrible but next tier up ;)

Personally I can't wait for this dreadful season to be over :D

Just watching MOTD and re United I am much happier this year than last.

LVG commands some respect. There have been a load of injuries and new faces.

Biggest concern really being de Gea's future...

Man U can take Martinez off us if they want, before he becomes Barcelona's next manager of course....

Absolutely no chance would moyes have gotten the same points this season ( and he certainly wouldnt have got Di Maria last summer which might or might not have been a blessing as its turned out)

Even if you weren't rubbish we'd have still comfortably finished in the top 4

Not necessarily, after us beating you at anfield you have dropped a further 8 out of fifteen points available ( or 11 out of 18 Inc vs us), apply that to last season and top four wouldnt have been so comfortable

Frank you come out with a lot of nonsense. You're seriously suggesting that Liverpool's form last season hinged on 1 result against Utd? **** me.

And the reason why we dropped as many points as we did this season was because we're not playing well and can't score.

Utd being rubbish last season made it easier for us to finish in the top 4 but as it turned out, it wouldn't have made a difference. We would have finished there had you not been either, at the expense of Arsenal or Chelsea.
