Greta Thunberg

Just a puppet.
The problem is real, but the solution not a simple thing like swap a ribeye steak for a bag of British potatoes.
Does anyone believe that changing overnight the whole power stations for solar and wind would sort the problem out? How the average person would be able to afford his electricity bill? Remember who will pay for the new stations.
Another issue is from my generation (37yo) and possible one before me, but much worst now: the amount of things we consume. And specially what we consume.
Food from around the globe, daily, many flights per year, mommy and daddy drive to and from school, also any other trip, as the little darlings can't use public transport. New phone every year. New clothes every week. So a not so simple solution.

Surely this is ALL within the realms of change for us? None of these things are necessities.

Maybe it's difficult to respect your elders when they still haven't really made any inroads to the pollution issue, vote in Trump as a leader, bang on about Brexit, made home-ownership a fantastical dream, etc :p

Sure, but as adults you and I both know that its a hell of a lot more complex than that. We are talking about highly complex multinational economic systems where there are almost as many opinions and options as there are people. There are lots of things Id personally like to be fixed in our world but cherry picking one cog out of a far bigger machine will not work. Experience teaches you this.

Yes, but the best visionaries of all time said screw it to how things were, and dreamed how things could be. The reality of life is daunting (and kinda depressing), and once that takes hold, you just kinda become another tiny cog in the big machine.

I mean, I could kinda understand it if Greta was stood outside your house shouting at you, but some people take what she is saying so personally. Let her do her thing targeting governments and leaders and whatnot.

True, the closest i have come to caring is what ive read in this thread so hardly affecting me or my life.

Still, if her brainwashed ramblings end up causing me problems indirectly (tax rises, my petrol car being taken away (labour's latest policy), protestors closing roads where i want to go), then I would be more annoyed.

Sure, but HOW do we change it? Not like the protesters against capitalism/G8 in London few years ago, wearing Nike, taking selfies with iPhones and few other hypocrite things.
When I mention population control, hey, it makes sense. The planet can't feed the population if it keeps growing exponentially.
And we eat more, consume more, and good/bad we are living longer.
Going vegan: do you believe that if all the areas used for cattle were to be used to grow vegetables and fruits, all the pesticides (we know they are/will be used) won't cause even more damage to rivers/environment?

She isn't doing her thing though, she's a pawn and when the circus has moved on she'll be yesterdays news.

There are far more pressing matters closer to home that will cause us pain than anything she can achieve in the next few months.

So because we don't know what to do, we shouldn't bother trying to figure it out?

If parents didn't cave in to their childrens iphone and clothes demands, that would be a start.
Maybe have them go to school on public transport. You know, the very points you made just a few posts ago, those are easy quick wins, but people are comfortable, lazy, and I'm-alright-jack-no-extreme-weather-here-in-the-UK.

From her perspective, no-one actually seems to be trying to solve the problems we face (or at least those in the most powerful positions don't seem to care much in general).

Then why all the outrage? If she's going to fade off in to obscurity, why are so many people on the counter-offensive?

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, dont you realise this destroys our consumer led economy at the same time. What do all the people do for work who previously made iphones and cars and gadgets and all the other stuff we dont really need?

Like I said in another post on here somewhere, Thanos had the right idea.

But the problem is the government just needs a scapegoat to do all the noise and bring changes that won't improve anything, but won't touch were needs to be changed.
What environmental benefit, scrapping a 10 years old car, if properly maintained, for a poor aerodynamically fashionable SUV or an ev, hundreds of kg of rare metals?
Simply improving the way traffic and traffic lights works would shave more emissions than most of the changes proposed.
Public transport, when and were it work, it's fine. Not in Cambridge. And using a double decker, 2000-2005 with 2 passengers inside isn't efficient. Specially on narrow roads.

Feelings of guilt?
Envy that someone so young is getting the attention that they crave?

Pretty much, in a somewhat rampant society thriving on narcissism? Plus it's a good distraction from Brexit. Even journalists are nasty envious people. Journalists are the biggest driver of the outrage and the causing of aggravation. They're effectively agitators hiding behind freedom of the press. Effectively trolls.

Lets face it, there is hardly a day goes by there isn't an outrage. @krooton

Sure. But the jobs created to produce non-essential items are just needed because of the excessive population.
The economy is based on consume, but most of the noise is about fuels and emissions, but 99.99% of the activities require the use of fuels and transport for it, so does people.
When the whole thing a out McDonald's and it's straws was the headline, the company simply changed for paper ones, that won't work, a d are not recyclable. They were aware, but that's what was needed to silence the protesters. No one is mentioning it now.
And if the government were to introduce a control of 1 or 2 children per couple, how would be the outcry? If human are damaging the planet, the more of us, the worst.
Hail Thanos.
