Greta Thunberg

Bad luck for Greta this time. She'll doubtless try again.

STOCKHOLM, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Sweden's Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Greta Thunberg and hundreds of other activists cannot proceed with a lawsuit that had sought to force the state to take stronger action against climate change.

Activists filed a class action lawsuit in 2022 with a district court, arguing that the state violates rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights by not doing enough to limit climate change, or mitigate its effects.

"A court cannot decide that the parliament or the government must take any specific action. The political bodies decide independently on which specific climate measures Sweden should take," the Supreme Court said in a statement on Wednesday.

But the court added that it had not ruled out that a lawsuit formulated differently could be heard in Sweden, as the European Court of Justice has said groups meeting certain requirements may have the right to sue over climate change.

We are all going to die. That simple, really. We are heading for extinction. She is right, but not enough people care, or are prepared to make the necessary changes.
And I think she is getting out of touch, she is becoming too extreme, and the more extreme she becomes the fewer people will listen to her.

obviously eventually that is true.... however ultimately i dont think anything we are doing now will do will drive us to extinction (nuclear / biological war not withstanding)

That isnt to say i do not think the future is grim. i can definitely imagine us screwing up the planet enough for us that there will be a global culling with billions wiped out and it being fairly miserable for the rest.

my view now is not about averting a crisis. i hope i am wrong but i suspect that ship has sailed.......... but about delaying it enough so that our kids get a decent life before it goes to hell.... his generation are gonna have to try to come up with something to help their kids and i think that could be difficult.

IF when the big oil companies and governments found out about the impending disaster back in the late 70s they had grabbed the nettle... still made their billions but had invested in renewables and not deliberately stunted them and spread disinformation then I think we could have been in far better shape but this last 50 years has been nothing short of a disaster environmentally speaking. The fact that people like trump are in power now and still dont care really says it all TBH.

i dont agree with all of Thunbergs methods and there is definitely a wiff of champagne socialism about her (we dont all have millionaires lending us their yachts or EVs etc) and in some aspects she is a little bit like the JSO people imo and put potential allies off her.

but overall i think her message is true enough and she does get her generation engaged which is important.

I am afraid climate change just isn't like that. It's not a uniform. There are tipping points, points where the system breaks and climate change suddenly accelerates. The huge problem is that once we hit one of these tipping points, the change is horribly fast and unstoppable. Some are so violent they can raise the temperatures by five degrees in a decade.
We have seen tipping points in the historical record, but we are pumping CO2 in to the atmosphere thousands of times faster than nature ever did. Five years ago pessimistic estimates put us hitting one at 2100. Now the optimistic estimates are 2100 and the pessimistic estimates are 2060. I used to think that our children wouldn't see the mass death begin, but now I am not so sure.

I am not sure anyone ever listened to Thundberg. She was a novelty becuase she was so young. No one actually wanted to hear her message.

am not sure anything you said above negates anything i said...... in general i agree with you. if the polar icecaps melt (iirc some estimates suggest we are already past the tipping point) then the amount of gasses released from the melting could set off the chain reaction you mention.... or if the gulf stream collapses that will be a doozy as well
the 2100 (optimistically) is also what i had in mind where i said i was hoping any changes we make mean our kids may be ok - albeit not certain.... if we can put off that tipping point as long as possible.

but even so where we perhaps disagree is i dont think it will be an extinction level event even when it happens. human life will probably still be sustainable in some places....... but its not something worth arguing about because regardless of if extinction level or "just" a few billion dying, and a few billion being forced to migrate, either way it will be pretty miserable and is something we should have done more to mitigate. (myself included.. i am aware i am part of the problem)

Maybe not fewer. But the followers will get more wacky. The end result is the same.

She has failed because she ranted but never actually came up with solutions.

She and her ilk are wrong. For all of the planet's woes, there is one root cause. Too many humans, wanting too much stuff.
When the 'Politian's' start to work on this, instead of jumping on the nearest bandwagon as it passes, I, for one, will have much more faith in 'our' future.

Saying there are to many people is political suicide, try telling someone they aren't allowed to have kids or only one kid. So that won't be put forward as a fix :/

But it is the root cause of it all.

Only goes to show how importantly they take this whole planetary dilemma. Time for a new way for humans to organise themselves. Anybody would think we're still reliant on a bunch of unqualified self interested freeloaders.

She ranted once and never did it again.
Up to that point she had been invited to around 20 meetings, asked to talk but absolutely nobody took any notice of her at any of them and she was fed up of adults in authority wasting her time.
Of course that's all people see, the one rant and Social Media is still full of the one and only rant and of course people quoting it on here.
She wasn't there for solutions, she always said listen to the Experts but nobody wants to listen to them or David Attenborough.
