GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

It's funny how people moan about the price before launch of a graphics card... your'd think by now, after years of this happening, that people would know the prices will come down considerably a few weeks after release. Which always happens.

And if ATI could actually compete in the high end cards would be faster by now. I've seen some people say ATI dont want to because sales are mostly in the mid-range... what a joke, these people wouldn't being saying that about NV if it was the other way around. ATI simply cant compete, having the fastest card sells more of your whole line-up. And when the next gen consoles come about i can hardly see Sony/MS going to ATI for a mere average GPU. Not to mention that from Steams servey, the most popular card amongst millions of it's users is the 8800 series, infact it's all NV at the top.

What i'm saying is kids: stop bitching, because if you ran a company like NV, you know your'd milk your existing products and hold off performance gains when theres no competition. Look at how much money it's making them.

The 360's GPU is actually very good and when compared to PS3 is similar depending on games so ATI and Nvidia were close there, i think the 360 had a slight edge though.

as for midrange selling more i think i would agree with that, not everyone wants to spend a lot on a card even if it is only a slightly larger percentage over people who buy high end cards.

How much do you reckon these new cards will drop by within a few weeks after then?

Yes the 360 does have a better GPU than the PS3's, which is basically a 7900 for the most part, and because of this 360 also has better image quality (AF and AA) and better depth of field blur (image quality is something from that era ATI had the lead in). But when these GPU's were designed it was back in the days when it was very close between ATI and NV with the top end cards.

I'd expect the GTX280 to be £390 - 440 on most sites when released (over £400 for ones that are actually in stock), OCUK in particular always cash in on new products when theres limited supply... then over the next two weeks it will go down to £360-ish on some places. Then in a months time even lower. Basically what happened with the GX2 (all assuming there is limited supply on release).

I don't think they really are all we have until next year. There will be a 55nm refresh of the Nvidia cards in the next 3 to 4 months, then we also have the 4870X2 to look forward to in probably 6 to 8 weeks - we're in June already. A 4850X2 will also make an appearance at some other point, and you also never know what card Nvidia will squeeze out just before their 55nm refresh - some sort of GX2 or another Ultra.

They may not be hugely different, but there will be a steady stream of refreshes to keep us going, and those refreshes will be the only things to reduce the price of the newly released cards.

The first retailer has listed Nvidia's new GTX 280 and thanks to this early bird we now have a general idea about GTX 280 pricing. Unfortunately, the retailer wasn't kind enough to show some specs or even the picture of the card, so we have to wait a bit longer to see those.

The listed card comes from Asus, and the full name of it is ENGTX280/HTDP/1G GTX280 CTLR1GB DDR3 PCI-E DVI-IX2 HDTV. As mentioned, the price stands at €574,94, but bear in mind that this is the first price that we have seen, and that this retailer isn't the cheapest one around.

575 Euro. bloody expensive indeed

No way I am paying that amount of money for a GPU. I could buy a large HDTV for that

I think I will just grab the ATI offerings unless they are very very slow, but I figure as long as they are faster than the 8800 GTX / Ultras then I should be pretty happy. As long as they play a game of "the price is right".

Finding it hard not to be tempted by these new cards!

But I think that price has put any rash decisions I might make on hold for a bit anyways! :p

I for one will NOT be buying anything that costs more than £300 after buying a 8800GT for £170 and it performing close to 8800GTX speeds which cost more than double at the time It's just not going to happen.

ATI for me for the first time ever i think this time round.

And presumably only then if the ATI solution shows significant improvement over the 8800GT as well.

The 360s GPU has unified shaders which wasn't even available for the PC market when it was released. Microsoft went with nVidia for the first Xbox and that relationship ended badly, because nVidia wanted to charge too much for an old GPU.

So I think ATI still have a very good chance. It is based on price after all not just performance. Why do you think the PS3 has a lousy 7900? It could have had a 8800 and then it would have destroyed the 360 for graphics.
