GTAV performance thread.

I don't think the VRAM indicator in GTAV is even remotely accurate.

Yeah mine is miles off also, i wouldnt worry bout it :). Apparently im using 6500mb/6100mb and after burner says im only using 5000mb.

As long as it runs smooth and looks nice its all good.

The game is so undemanding ive acatully dropped my cards down to 800/1250 which is my energy saving profile i use in wow, cause im getting cooked in my room here my pc is kicking out so much heat. As long as it stays around 60 fps i dont mind.

Apparantly if u have afterburner or fraps running it causes the err_d3d innt crash.

I uninstalled afterburner and my game was stable for 2 hours

Afterburner doesnt cause my game to crash, its when i start to record with afterburner thats when it crashes. Anyway taken a still screeny to try and show what its doing, this is what I mean

Not sure whats happening to my shadows, but if you can imagine, when I move my character, this defined area moves with me. It hasn't been doing this the past 4 or 5 days, its just something that has started now. I've tried reinstalling latest drivers, using default graphic settings in game but nothing sorts this issue out. Its so annoying. I'm running Very High on all settings, I've tried MSAA, FXAA and restored defaults. I verified game integrity in Steam, messed with CCC but nothing cures it. Anyone?

Have a similar problem but it isn't consistent. I have only run with MSI AB and also had a crash before going to sleep last night (err_d3d innt crash).

Maybe it's MSI AB conflicting for the shadow problem we are having ?

OK, SweetFX definitely seems the way to go here!!

Need to do more testing but disable in game MSAA and FXAA and use sweetfx with SMAA enabled, a touch of light lumasharpen, and it's good and runs well. SMAA is less blurry than the in game FXAA anyway and the lumasharpen helps too, plus there's no stutter from using MSAA with SLI!

I have to say, I'm not amazed by the graphics really. I own this game on PS4, on a very nice 50 inch Sony TV. Sat 8 or so feet away it really looks great on PS4, and I'm not sure it stands up so well for close up desktop gaming, even at 1440p and with the PC enhancements. There's just a slight 'mudiness' to everything. Almost like TXAA is enabled (which I loathe!), but it isn't.

Have a play around in the sweetfx config, or just try one of the brighter preset configs people are making, you can probably get rid of that muddy feel.

I think the game looks real nice now ive tried a few presets, it looks a lot sharper and less washed out. I think they were going for that washed out look though when they designed it, its probably to some peoples taste. THere was a lot of washed out looking preset for gta4 so some people must have liked that look. :)

Something wrong there then.

Game looks far better for me than the PS4 version.

does anyone CTD when using afterburner to record in game footage? As soon as I hit record, it boots me out of game. Also, I cant start the game with DXTory, just doesnt launch. Seems I'm having real issues with issues with recording.

Reason why I want to show some footage I have, I got this really annoying shadow issue around 20 feet from my character. I have like a texture line the draws the shadow in front of me, as I move, the shadow drawn receives a good amount of detail, but its like this moving drawing shadow in front of me in a line, its so annoying. It's only just started happening today and I cant figure out why its doing it. I've watched Gregs video as well, and he has it happen as well, so it's clearly not an AMD thing. It appears on walls, buildings, fences etc

Recording fine here with afterburner, though i have my own seperate issues with afterburner, if i start AB up when i'm viewing a youtube video usually it freezes the pc and i have to shut it down via the power button. :(

Bloody hell, that shadow quality setting is such a resource hog... I have to drop it to high if I want to get 60 fps in heavily forested areas. Otherwise, the framerate's between 42-55 and the game starts feeling rather jerky. But then, very high looks noticeably nicer;/

I don't get how people can run this at constant 60fps@1080p almost maxed. I'm on a 4790k/GTX 970@1506mhz and it seems hardly possible. The fps drops in grassy/forested areas (and sometimes at spots which don't even look particularly good) are quite annoying and a bit unwarranted because, as nice as the game's foliage looks, it's by no means visually groundbreaking.

that because they dont and if they do they just obviously be standing still admiring the screen

People are defining 'maxed' as mostly 'very high' with a bit of AA.

In reality I'm a million miles away from maxing this out at 1440 with a pair of 780's, I have to compromise extended distance scaling just to allow very high textures with 2xmsaa. Even then I'm relying heavily on GSync to compensate for the lows hitting ~45fps.

Just a heads up too, 3dvision breaks SLI, only one card is detected when enabled, also may want to drop grass to 'normal' otherwise it only renders in one eye, as does on screen text/hit markers. How nvidia marked it as 'excellent' in profile rating i'll never know.

Oh, you can also add your own MP3's into the 'user music' folder in /my documents/rockstar games/gtav/user music and it allows you to select the 'self station' radio station which will then select your own music :)

Yeah the ingame msaa is a total FPS hog, switch to sweetfx for your msaa and fxaa then ya can turn up ya settings a bit more. If i apply sweetfx MSAA and FXAA and turn off vsync my fps drops from like 120 down to 100, but if i enable 4xMSAA and FX AA ingame my fps drops down to about 65 fps.

Thats a cool idea with the music, ill be doing that.

You can use shortcuts to the music folders/mp3s so you don’t need to copy the mp3's.

if you dont listen to the normal radios in this game youre missing soooo much.
so many easter eggs & funny comments & Storyline information.

Taslk radio - funny as hell
Blaine Radio - Funny as hell & Great with driving a big rig ;)

this is from somone whos done GTA V many times its worth while & bring you back a few years to what was popular then...:p

Running very nicely at 1440p on GTX970 SLI on x58 :D (Xeon hex at 4.5ghz). Sticks to vsync in the majority of situations.

I have everything maxed with the following exceptions -

MSAA 2x (standard and reflection)
Grass high (what a resource hog this is!)
Tesselation high (there are very occasional issues with this eg streams running down mountains where max tesselation reduces to 20-30 fps!)
The advanced distance scaling I have just under halfway to keep the VRAM in check

Shame MFAA doesn't woek on SLI as this really does need 4x :(

I've decided to turn off MSAA completely as i found when driving round certain parts of the city, like under a huge load of bridges it would cause an fps drop down to like 45-50fps from 60. I also found distance scaling to do the same thing on QuadFire at 4K. Now I've discovered the correct balance of settings for smooth gameplay in 99.9% of all situations I've come across so far. I think this game will benefit greatly from FreeSync.

If anyone is using 2/3/4 gpu setup and suffering from similar issues, please try my settings (or lower) and see if they work for you. I hope Rockstar can improve on this in future patches, because I've got the gpu grunt for maximum settings with x4 AA and x4 reflective AA.

At the below settings my gpu's sit at about 60% usage each.

I think it's just the game. iv had this happen to my shadows in places. Ive even seen it on AMDMatt's pic but only slightly but you can recognize it where ive highlighted.

Well this sucks.

After spending 2 days downloading off steam, cleaning out my loop as it's been ignored for a while, and expecting a nice weekend session on this, I totally forgot I was still on windows 8. I can't actually upgrade to 8.1 because it's on a volume license that I can't sort out till mid week, so no latest drivers for me.

Stuck on 14.7 beta (that's the latest one compatible with windows 8) so my 3x r290s are rocking out a steady 35 frames a second. Makes me sad.

Pretty sure it will run totally maxed at 1080p, at 60fps when I finally get around to sorting windows out though, so hanging in there. Just.
