GTAV performance thread.

I've decided to turn off MSAA completely as i found when driving round certain parts of the city, like under a huge load of bridges it would cause an fps drop down to like 45-50fps from 60. I also found distance scaling to do the same thing on QuadFire at 4K. Now I've discovered the correct balance of settings for smooth gameplay in 99.9% of all situations I've come across so far. I think this game will benefit greatly from FreeSync.

If anyone is using 2/3/4 gpu setup and suffering from similar issues, please try my settings (or lower) and see if they work for you. I hope Rockstar can improve on this in future patches, because I've got the gpu grunt for maximum settings with x4 AA and x4 reflective AA.

At the below settings my gpu's sit at about 60% usage each.

How the game looks at these settings.

MSAA is intensive, but just Reduce the following they hurt my fps more than MSAA
Grass to High
Post FX to Normal ( turns off motion blur DOF)

i can run MSAA 4X just fine after even on Nvidia GPU usage seems to be tied to MSAA... without MSAA my GPu usage is like yours with always 80%+

I'll give it a try, i didn't mess with post fx. I found grass didn't change much for me when i tested, but then i wasn't in a forest.

I think it's just the game. iv had this happen to my shadows in places. Ive even seen it on AMDMatt's pic but only slightly but you can recognize it where ive highlighted.

Yep, I'm just looking around the internet, Guru3d GTAV thread is full of people with the same shadow issues. There seems to be a known Shadow LOD box that sits around the character. The shadow inside the box seems to be high res, yet outside the box appears as low res. As you walk, the hi res shadow renders as you move making it look horrible. Some fixes to the .xml document apparently work for some, but not for me. Hopefully this gets sorted because I cant stand it. Doesnt happen all the time, It's just around midday when the sun is high and in certain places.

This 'shadow box' happens on the PS4 verison too (or it did last time I played it. They've released some patches recently that may have changed that, I don't know).

I was very disappointed to see exactly the same issue on firing up the PC version. What are the xml tweaks to try and fix it???

Matt, no extended draw distance?

Doesn't seem to hugely impact mine until the VRAM runs out (at 3.5gb :() at which point it's unplayable.

STUTTER

Here's my findings so far. Might be useful for anyone with SLI and Gsync....

Early testing on first getting game:

- Any sort of MSAA applied causes stutter with SLI. There is no stutter using just one of my 780Ti's and using MSAA. Even if only 2x MSAA, which is well within specs, and my Vram is not being over used (using 2.5GB max, monitoring it) I get stutter using SLI.

- Just using FXAA on its own is very smooth with SLI (but has slight blurring to the whole image as usual. I don't like FXAA)

- Using SweetFX SMAA, slight lumasharpen and a touch of liftgammagain and subtle curve tweaks, NO MSAA in game and - Boom! Looks better, and all is Great, no stutter with SLI.

- If using a 120Hz monitor, and you have Gsync - Set the refresh rate to 85hz in game. Stops the frame rate jumping around so much, and it is totally smooth as silk with SLI !!!!!!!!!!
This is testing in the first area once you're into the game - outside Franklin's house etc. Need to test other areas but so far I have fixed my SLI stutter for now!

EDIT - just driven round a good aection of the city and went to the beach....still stutter free :-)

Running absolutely awesome now. I am still a bit disappointed with it not looking as sharp as it could. It needs a better implementation of AA I think. I would like to try DSR as I bet that's the best fix all round, but it doesn't work with SLI and Gsync still. Come on Nvidia, how long is it going to take.

Just trying some new settings now which seems to work pretty well.

Same as i posted above, but distance scaling maxed out, AA x4 + reflective, Vsync on but FPS cap set in Afterburner to 50. I'm going for complete smoothness over maxing the settings out. Not sure if i prefer this or my 60FPS locked with Vsync on settings. Looks pretty similar. :p

I'm at 60 fps 90% of the time but I think I'll have to either drop shadow quality to high or disable high resolution shadows to avoid fps drops in grassy areas... I've already dropped grass from ultra to very high and tesselation from very high to high. Extended draw distance is almost at zero. Wonder how many sacrifices this needs to make it run smooth on a fairly capable PC:p

heres the annoying shadow bug....glad its not just me, it's appearing all over the net now, this has to get fixed. Mine is nowhere near as pronounced as that, but this is the exact problem many are experiencing at certain times of the day when the sun is shining at its fullest.

Yep, that's a very good, if extreme example of it. I have this, and am assuming everyone has it???
Can't believe they released it like that , it's terrible.

tessellation & draw distance dont make any FPS inpact for me.

just dropping grass/shadows/POSTFX makes world of difference :)

postFX makes a huge FPS difference for me.

Got Rockstars attention, posted a ticket along with tons of info, screenshots, videos etc so hopefully should get noticed. It's now getting quite a lot of coverage on Steam now so the problem is out there. Hopefully we can get it sorted, I'm now looking for it everywhere :(

Thanks, I'll try to tinker with the settings a bit later in the day. Yeah, the fps gain from dropping tesselation is negligible. However, I found extended distance scalling to be quite taxing at times. Extended shadow distance doesn't seem to make any difference fps wise.

Is there a big difference between post fx on ultra and very high? I think very high looks slightly different but it might be just a placebo. What else would you suggest dropping to get the fps up a bit? Setting shadow quality to high will do the trick but I'm looking for workarounds since very high looks really neat;p Maybe I should ditch high resolution shadows?
