GTX 590 anyone ?

Can't really be selling that good can they? I mean.. they've appeared in 'This Week Only' with some money knocked off :p

I can't see them seeing that well either, I wouldn't expect gibbo to say anything other than it's good though, he's trying to sell them (no disrespect to Gibbo, but we all know he's a salesman).

Lol you have a point there. I think the nv 5 series and amd 6 series are a hard sell because they are not that much faster than what came out a year ago. The 6990 is probably the biggest jump in speed we have seen over its predecessor in a year.

I`m far from a expert but as far as i can see the 6990 is nowhere near as bad from what its being made out to be.
I realise it may run quite hot and quite loud but 1 db louder than a 480 (read from another thread on this forum where the case was closed) isnt excactly terrible. I realise it may not be the massive jump in performance from people who own 5 series ati or nvidia cards but for people who dont it would be a massive upgrade.

The price however i cannot defend and its just to much money and i really cannot see any nvidia 590 being any cheaper which in my opinion means both will be badly overpriced

People argue about 1 is gonna be faster than the other when 1 isn't even out yet LOL. I'm gonna take a WILD guess and say the 590 will win in some benches/games and the 6990 in others.

Some people even go as far as to guarantee results or claim to have sources with inside information.
Im all for looking forward to something but why make wild claims instead of just waiting till said product comes out and seeing what it can do then.

Completley agree with your statement that the 590 will win in some benchmarks but lose in others too.

Armchair experts ya gotta love em

So come 22nd March we should have a new, worlds fastest Dual GPU card.
Who of us on here is seriously thinking of getting one ?
What are the conditions that will secure a definite purchase ?

Cheaper than 2 single cards, cooler and quieter than 2 single cards, overclock exactly as well as 2 cards................

Actually if it just averaged out to offer as good value as 2x570gtx it would be a great buy.

I can take a little more heat and noise but to compensate you want to save money.

THe 4870x2 I had was louder and way hotter, overclocked less well but was FAR cheaper than 2 cards, the 5970 was too expensive to be worth dealing with those issues, as is the 6990 and most likely the 590gtx aswell.

Unless you're going to drop £1400 or so on 2x590gtx/6990's for quadfire/sli, then theres no reason to get a dual card.

Will be impressed if they manage to get it quieter/cooler/as fast compared to the single gpu's.

Its hard to get a read on just how bad the noise is on a 6990, [H] showed better temps and didn't find the noise insane while Anand seem to think its insanely loud and awful, too hot and their power testing is beyond ridiculous.

THen again Anand are a little Nvidia biased and [H] a little AMD loving of late.

You won't find anyone more neutral than me, I have had many Nvidia and ATI cards over the years and have good knowledge of the drivers and software if anyone ever needs some advice.

I really hope that was tongue in cheek...

Anyway, I think it will be two downclocked GTX580 cores, will just about surpass the 6990, and Nvidia will price lower than two GTX580s (about £600-650 I reckon) to gain market share. Could be (and probably will be) wrong...

Maybe they'll have a BIOS switch like AMD to switch between 'regarding the PCI-E spec' and 'sod it, I'm benching' modes...

AMD and nVidia aren't gaining marketshare from £500+ graphics cards, they don't make enough, and there's not enough demand. Marketshare is gained from the mid to low end.

Not that sort of market share. If everyone sees GTX590s in people's sigs on forums (and it's an e-peen card so people will display it) it's like free advertising. No-one gives a stuff about the Asus Ares because even though it was the fastest card, it was too expensive. I can see a similar thing happening to the GTX590 if it's too expensive. I do hope (well, not really, I couldn't care less) that Nvidia fit a triple slot cooler though - show some thought...

Well they shouldn't, would you by a PC advertised with 4GB of ram only to find it has only 2GB.

+1

Although it physically is there, until they manage to produce a way to enable communication between both gpu's I feel that there should be something in the way of information stating the facts on this point, even if it is in tiny, tiny small print. :D

The 22nd of March will be an interesting day indeed. For what I hear only ASUS and EVGA will be the AIBs to launch and stock the 590. Obviously it's all rumoured but to me that says this card will be rare indeed (as presumably nVidia can't make enough for all the AIBs to sell.)

Also perhaps like the 6990 low leakage cores are hard to come by hence the rarity?

Either way it's going to be expensive (i'd guess a good £600+) but y'know what, I think it would sell. The reason why I think that is the response to the 6990 was generally, "get two 6950's, unlock and crossfire them" which is fair enough.

But SLI motherboards are much harder to come by than crossfire boards so most people can't SLI 570's to get the same effect from the 590 (okay so people who buy a 590 are likely to have an SLI P67 or X58 board at least but you never know) so "SLI on a stick" sounds much more desirable than "Crossfire on a stick" (as nearly every baord with two PCI-E slots can crossfire to some degree.)

Not to mention the average man on the street will pay more for the nVidia name, so nVidia will perhaps price it more to reflect that (also as its the first dual GPU since the 295 it will have e-peen written all over it!)

What is intresting however, if you look at the picture on TechPowerUp (even though it is old) it shows the GPUs at either end of the card so it looks like they might be going AMD with a central mounted fan (seeing as they did that with the single PCB 295 so they're hardly strangers to the concept)

I'd never buy one but I can't wait to see what it can do!
