GTX 780 Owners Club

EVGA GTX780 ACX
My card arrived last week, but did not have time to install until Sunday, so here is my report of a very disappointing four days
Really been looking forward to this GPU (OCuk had a waiting list for this card).as my HD6970 was getting very sluggish at 2560x1600.
Read all about the problems with 320.18 so only installed the 320.11 driver on the EVGA disk.

Getting multiple crashes:
BSOD whilst on IE 10, Heaven and Valley benchmarks.
Metro 2030 locks up randomly. Sometimes Alt/Tab/Del works, otherwise hard reset.
Crysis2/Bioshock/Metro LL seem to be OK.
New Dell U3014 often refuses to recognise any signal from GPU. Switching off/on on the monitor has no effect but powering off/on at the 13A plug for the monitor does work.

I wondered if it was my overclock so tried OCuk settings and also stock settings but same results. CPU/GPU temps seem fine. Also updated the EVGA BIOS as listed earlier.

What do I do now? I think I’ll try 320.18 and the EVGA utilities today, but not optimistic, so will re-install my HD6970 later. At least I can finish the Metro 2030 achievements. Perhaps I should have bought a HD7970?

Over the last month I’ve increased RAM/overclocked the i7 again/and upgraded the GPU. Just looking at FRAPS with my same quality setting throughout:
Dell 2408 (1920x1200) with 8Gb RAM and HD6970
Metro 2030 = 20
Heaven = 34
Valley = 51
Dell 2408 (1920x1200) with12Gb RAM and HD6970
Metro 2030 = 25
Heaven = 34
Valley = 52
Dell 3014 (2560x1600) with 12Gb RAM, standard clock and HD6970
Metro 2030 = 21
Heaven = 25
Valley = 30
Dell3014 (2560x1600) 12Gb RAM O/C to 3.8 and HD6970
Metro 2030 = 30
Heaven = 27
Valley = 32
Dell3014 (2560x1600) 12Gb RAM O/C to 3.8 and GTX780
Metro 2030 = 57
Heaven = 82
Valley = 65

So when the 780 works it is a big improvement – it’s just not reliable. The big surprise was the marked difference in Metro 2030 a 50% increase in RAM gave. Overclocking from 3.6 to 3.8 does not seem to make a big difference, so I’ve stepped back to 3.6 for a cooler every day setting

Has anyone RMA’d a 780 due to poor reliability?

OCuk Titan Goliath. EX58-ud3r(1.6). FK BIOS. i7 920 DO @3.6 on air. 256 Gb Crucial M4. 12Gb Corsair Vengeance. Corsair TX750W. Cooler Master Cosmos.

I think your problem may be the drivers, unfortunately this will not help until NVidia release their next update.

I use GTX Titans which are similar to the GTX 780, the important difference is I can use 314.22 drivers. I have tried all the drivers in the 320.xx family of drivers and have had problems with all of them (not as bad as you but similar). For me the solution is easy, use 314.22 for now. For you it maybe a case of waiting for the next driver update.

I am sorry if this does not help much for now. I hope you get it sorted soon.

FYI i have a similar setup (old i7, same mobo, 780) and have had no issues with the latest drivers.

Not tried all the games you have tho. I've not updated anything on the mobo.

Planetside 2, Crysis 3, BF3, Grid 2 (what i've mainly been playing) all rock solid for me.

Good luck!

Have you seen this on the EVGA forums, their is an update for all EVGA GTX 780's >> http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1944772&mpage=1

  • EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Firmware Update v80.10.37 - Updated 5/31/13

Q. What are the changes in this new firmware?
Updated motherboard compatibility

Q. Do I need to reapply this update every time I update a driver or reinstall the O.S.?
A. This update is attached to the card, no matter where it goes. If you update the driver, the EVGA firmware update is still applied.

Q. How can I tell what version I firmware I currently have?
A. There are multiple ways to do this, one way is to right click on desktop and go to NVIDIA control panel. Click on Help, then System Information. Scroll to the bottom of the Details window and it will show your "Video BIOS version". It will be listed as EXAMPLE: 80.10.36.00.80. The numbers in bold identify the version number.

Q. I just bought my card, will it have this updated firmware?
A. Chances are yes, as new firmware is release, new products shipping from EVGA will also have this firmware version applied.

Hi, thank you for the replies. I must admit almost giving up - and I've really been looking forward to the 780.

Opethdisciple: I'm on the latest MB BIOS (FK) for EX58-ud3r rev1.6, and updated the GPU BIOS from EVGA. Might be worth trying re-flashing the MB BIOS, but all is well with the HD6970 and the FK BIOS has not been updated for 2 years.

Kaappstad: The 314.22 drivers might work – downloading as I type. Also downloading 320.18 – it’s worth a try. If not the 780 is back in its box and I’ll use the HD6970 which does work. I could leave it there for a few weeks and see if Nvidia come up with a new driver or just send it back to OCuk. I wonder what they will say?

OCPete: That’s a good clock on your 950. I was just over 70c at 3.8 (tried both 20x185 and 21x181) so stepped back to 3.6. I would recommend 12Gb of DDR3. Just updated Crysis 3 so will give that a spin this afternoon before changing drivers. But 320.11 is causing other non-game problems.

When it is stable the EVGA GTX780 ACX gives fairly good scores in Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 using the forum settings:
FPS: 54.4
Score: 1371
Min FPS: 8.4
Max FPS: 114.9
System Platform: Windows 7 (build 7601, Service Pack 1) 64bit

I don't think the 314.22 drivers will work with a GTX 780, having said that I think it's only a matter of days until NVidia come up with some new drivers.

Hi Guys,

Got my GTX 780 ACX SC From OCUK recently and was just a bit concerned. As you can see from the attached photo my box just has the word Superclocked stuck on on a label rather than the round SC logo in the bottom right like everyone elses. Should I be concerned or am I really overthinking it when it comes to packaging? :P

There was also no protective cover over the main PCI-E connector, which I thought was standard fare but as this is my first graphics card I may well be wrong!

Tried out my 780 WF 3X last night and ran a few benchmarks. Got really noticeable coil whine when running the the latest 3D mark in the first Ice test, got an XFX 650W modular PSU so I can't imagine that's the cause. Not sure whether to send it back. It didn't do it on 3Dmark 11, and nowhere has stock. :confused:

Is this score okay?

Running a 4670K @stock, 8GB Samsung green@ stock.

Tested BF3 and I don't get any coil whine. Will test a few other games out tonight when I'm back from work but it only appears to do it in 3D Mark at present which from looking on google seems a common problem with various AMD and Nvidia cards.

EDIT: noticed it when computer went into sleep mode, looks like its going back.

Just got my 780 windforce 3x oc. But I have a slight concern if any 1 can help. There are no clips on the power connectors to hold the wires in place. The writes just slot on and pull out of the connectors without pressing the release clip on the wires coming from the psu. Wondering is that's how it's ment to be.

These are the clips i am talking about. mine are not like this picture, they look like they have been snapped off of something.

Finally built my new setup last night - i5 3570k and a Gigabyte GTX 780 Windforce. Still in the process of setting it up but already got what seems to be a nice, stable 4.2Ghz overclock on the CPU without a voltage bump. Will try OCing the Windforce tonight.

It generally happens when excessive high frame rates are being produced - That particular benchmark is a culprit as are many title screens to games that don't cap themselves. My 780's do it, my 7950's did it as did my 5970's. I have no problems when playing games.

Thanks. I'm just concerned it does it in sleep mode. Can the others above with this card please test it on 3D mark and let me know if yours is the same please? Does my scored above look right?

If you got coil whine with all those cards I would be looking at the psu and not the cards.

I'm going to test it on the interval graphics chip if it will run 3d mark to rule out the PSU. Mine is a brand new 650 xfx modular. Surely that's more than enough for my system?
