Guild Wars 2

World of Warcraft looks terrible in comparison to many games, not just Guild Wars 2 (which is shaping up to be the best of the lot), but when you actually log in to play them, Azeroth is still probably the most atmospheric, accessible and down-right polished world in any fantasy MMO. Although that's more a damning indictment on the competition than it is praise on Blizzard. Yes, they've done a great job in designing their game, but 6-7 years down the line you'd expect somebody to have created something better. The technology is there - it's the sheer lack of visual creativity within the MMORPG genre which is letting them down, and part of the reason why so many games are doomed to fail before they're even released.

Guild Wars 2 is looking like it will be the one to finally dethrone Blizzard's creation in the visual stakes.

AOC looked good, but it was a huge system hog.

GW2 is meant to have low system reqs for its visual quality, but they havnt been released yet.

Being a DX10 based game, I think they are going to be optimizing it to be able to run maxed out on a single 4850 - 5770, with minimum spec being based a mid range DX9 card like an X1600 XT or 7600 GT (Without AA).

Thats purely speculation on what I reckon would be required to run what I see.

I'd say a number of MMOs have bettered the world, AOC for sheer graphical fidelity and atmosphere, Vanguard again on graphics and atmosphere, plus sheer size, tabula rasa (IMO) created a beautiful varied world as well, obviously your preference is Azeroth and whilst all these games were lacking in one or more other areas wow isnt, I don't think it is Azeroth that has kept people playing like they do.

by the time GW2 comes out, the 680gtx nvidia and the new ATI cards will be out by then so having a 4890 running this game on medium setytings would be feasable

You need to remember that they are trying to get people from GW1 / WoW to play, and GW2's engine isnt actually very poly heavy. Its just painterly eye candy, and an improved GW1 engine with more bloom.

It was a hog, but performance wasnt in the post, the comment was on visuals and atmosphere, not performance. AoC had visuals and atmosphere by the bucket load. Otherwise one could argue that although GW2 looks good compared to WoW, its more of a system hog than WoW, hence it being merely a point in regards to visual/atmosphere.

Hopefully (I would fully expect anyway it as its a common option) there will be the ability to turn off the bloom. I have a strong dislike of bloom in games.

GW1 looks pretty good compared to wow

It certainly does. But then I'd expect that as one is an MMO and one isnt. I might as well say that Bad Company 2 looks good compared to WoW.

beeing an mmo has nothing to do with it... and you can compare wow and guild wars quite easily they are similar games with a similar style of engine.

an FPS is nothing like either

TBH everything I see in the gameplay videos that isnt covered by bright DX10 bloom looks almost identical to GW1, with higher detailed characters.

The parts which make heavy use of bloom seem pretty limited to the sunny human areas, everywhere else looks a lot less bright.

Well they dont really have a similar type of engine, one is open world with non-zoning interconnected areas, the other was heavily instanced with zoning and only a few people in most places at once. They were similar in regards to them both being fantasy based with spells and monsters, but in terms of what each engine did and was constructed to achieve they werent that similar. If GW1 is similar to WoW then you could claim that Neverwinter Nights was similar. The fact is that GW1 was designed in a way that didnt involve the same requirements as an open world MMO, so I wouldnt feel comfortable comparing the two of them directly. Now GW2 is open world and I would feel perfectly comfortable comparing that to another MMO.

Yeah its just a personal thing, I've never really liked the look of Bloom in any game, but as I say they are bound to have a toggle box to turn it on and off, so no problem :)
