Guild Wars 2

Guys can someone clarify the how gear works at 80.

By that I mean what are the levels of gear and how do you go about getting it (if that makes sense :p) almost 80 so want to know how to go about gearing up.

Thanks!

Well quality goes:

White -> Blue (Fine) -> Green (Masterwork) -> Yellow (Rare) -> Orange (Exotic)

So the stats on an Exotic piece of Lv80 armour will be higher than those on a Rare, and in turn higher than those on a green etc.

You can pick up a full set of Green Lv80 gear from the TP for pittance, talking 10-15s.

Full set of Rare around 1-1.5g.

Full set of Exotics around 10-12g.

Then you just have to decide what 'skin' you want, if its normal skins you like (Pirate and the sort), then you can just go nab some dirt cheap armour in the style you want and transmute away.

If you want the karma skins, you'll have to go run around and collect the parts you want, then transmute.

If you want the fancy dungeon skins, you'll have to go run dungeons for tokens, each run gets you 60 tokens. Boots and gloves cost 180 tokens each, shoulders and helm 210 tokens each, leggings and chest 300+ tokens each (can't remember exact amount).

Dungeon armour is already exotic, so max stats, but it might not be the stats you want, in which case you'll need to buy exotic armour with the stats you want, then transmute the look of dungeon armour over to it.

Then there are also the WvW armour sets you buy with tokens you get for kills. And the Orr Karma Armour that is 43k karma a piece (much easier to get now they've added liquid karma to the daily and monthly rewards). Both sets are Exotic in quality.

When you first hit lv80, I'd go snag a full set of Rare armour, and Green jewellery. You'll be set for doing any content with that. Then go pick out what stats and look you want, and start working towards that perfect exotic set :)

Cheers.

So karma stuff from Orr.

What are the cultural armour blokes you see in cities for?

Cultural armour is just that - it's limited to your race. Tier 1 stuff is reasonably priced but tier 2 and 3 is eye wateringly expensive. I think around 30g per piece at tier 3

I have a Tier 1 piece transmuted onto another piece's stats just because I like the look of it.

Ah, forgot about Cultural.

Cultural armour is all Rare quality, but it unique in looks to your race. So you're paying for the look rather than the stats.

As Porceliamone mentions, Tier 1 is pretty cheap, around 1g or so for a full set, Tier 2 is closer to 7g for a set. Tier 3, you better have deep pockets :D

But you don't have to go for Tier 3, it's all for looks. I prefer the Tier 2 Medium Sylvari stuff to the Tier 3, so I got Tier 2 and transmuted the look to my good stat gear.

Oh, and there is also your faction gear (Vigil, Priory, Whispers), depending which you picked, you'll be able to buy their style armour as well. Again, it's just for looks, and Rare quality.

Will give you an idea of what kind of set/pieces you want to grab.

Arah for female Asura is amazing! Me wants! (especially for my Necro!)

Great link, thanks!

My advice for 80 armor is to go to the mists, go to the PvP locker and preview different bits, find what mix you like the look of. For non-dungeon bits just craft or buy level 80 exotics and then find the item with the look you like and transmute. For the dungeon bits just farm the dungeon you need.

The nice thing about GW2 is that each dungeon has multiple sets of each type of armor, so you don't have to do specific dungeons for specific stats, you can do anything and you just base your choice on looks.

So are dungeon sets drops or purchased some way?

Essentially do I have to run Arah again and again hoping for the drop?

The first time you run a dungeon it's story mode, this is just normal drops, nothing that good. After you've done that it unlocks explorable mode which has multiple different paths you can choose through the dungeon, different paths give access to different bosses. All explorable mode bosses drop tokens (and you get extra tokens for finishing a run), these tokens let you pick and choose which item you want. The drops in dungeons are not that great, if you get lucky you could get some rares to upgrade yourself while working for the exotics, most of it is just sold, salvaged or mystic forged though for bonus money, the main goal is the tokens.

Getting a full set of armor from 1 dungeon is quite a bit of a grind, so if you vary up which items you need from different dungeons it'll keep the game a little more enjoyable and feel like less of a chore.

You just get 60 tokens for completing the dungeon now (20 tokens if you complete it again the same day). They changed it because people were farming 1 or 2 bosses and then resetting it.

That's quite a good change then. I haven't run any dungeons in over a month as I got full exotics a couple days after reaching 80.

Just to note, that's 60 tokens PER PATH per day.

So you can do all 3 paths and get 180 tokens before you have to wait for the daily reset.

A full dungeon armour set is 1380 tokens.

1380/60 = 23 runs

23/3 runs a day = 7.67

Doing all 3 paths a day, you can have your full set in just over a week. Faster if you want to grind out 20 token runs on top of the 60 token ones.

The money from all those runs could easily fund a few bits of armor, so depending on what look you want to go for you may not even need to do 23 runs.

Cheers for the help folks!

Oh and be prepared for the "omg wtf you've never done this before!? Looooool" elitism from some pug's.

Everyone has to start somewhere right? So expect a rough time in some groups where they want to power through and have picked up some tricks along the way that you may not have a clue about.

Yes, I have been on the cruddy end of this myself and suffered the indignation of being kicked from a team for not knowing everything there is to know about every single path.

Once you get through a few times it's so much easier though.
