Guild Wars 2

maybe I can work on my AOE heal positions a bit to work with it, I can after all only heal so much and if the most injured are away from danger I can focus them

Being ranged i often tend to try and sit as far back as i can, but obviously the most of the healing needs to go on the guys in thick of it (understandably!) where should i be as an ele? I try adding to the healing by going water or get closer and go earth depending on what a fight needs....it's just knowing what a fight needs between healing and dps :p

depends if you go staff or go daggers, daggers you are in and out doing damage close in then using a skill to jump away.

staff you tnd to say back and hit from afar, supporting allies when needed, unless your all about healing like me.

generally on staff I start with
Fire: do some extra damage and some DoT
Air: for extra movement speed, stun blind
Water: for healing and slows
Earth for bleeding and that wall ability that stops an enemy once or twice and has a small knockback.

on double daggers: i again start with fire
Fire: jump in deal burning damage with all skills
then switch to
air: I can also jump in with this and jump out with a knockback and the lightening whip is quite good too
earth: provides some bleed
water: still heals and slows but healing is not as good with them

scepter and focus dont tend to be that good for snything IMHO

I've been playing pretty much permanent staff build at the moment. I tried scepter and focus but found the skills to all be pretty naff and the damage to be poor.

I tend to attune to air almost all the time until i need to change to fire for some extra damage. Water i've used once or twice but Earth i almost never use.

Will give your suggestions a go and maybe get some daggers so that i can switch it up a bit if need be

stay with staff until you are pretty high level, its the fastest way to level, daggers are for damage output but are quite close range. Thats why they are used a lot in PVP, some great ele's cant be caught as they zip everywhere, then when they are out of spells they keep going with their fiery greatsword. Can't tell you how many times that sword has saved me lol

Problem you've got is bothering to heal. GW2 is all about avoiding damage. You'll never out heal it; especially in some of the later dungeons/fractals etc. Bosses can hit you for 8k a time, three times in a row in a couple of seconds if you're stood in the wrong place. No heal is going to help there!

You need to learn to master dodging, looking for enemy tells, and minding AoE circles/patterns.

Positioning and movement is key, and in any fight your focus should always be DPS. The faster you can kill, the less time they have to hurt you ;)

Don't get me wrong, if you've got a decent heal ready to go then fire it off, but don't actively try to be the 'healer' of a group, as all you are doing then is dropping your party DPS by 20%...

Hmmm - this discussion puts me off GW2. But I suspect it's because I've never really tried dungeons.

I've always been a healer and I enjoy it. But currently levelling my Necro and enjoying it. But my build is very dagger close range with some back up - I never swap to staff.

I've got a lvl 80 Engi (it reminds me of a Ritualist - but I'm experimenting with flamethrower) and a lvl 80 Guardian (which I never quite clicked with).

But, this is all PvE. The end game is very challenging. Getting into dungeons is difficult for a noob like me.

Most dungeons aren't difficult in all honesty if you are in a proper group, can be a pain with randoms.

Dungeons are difficult at first as you don't know what to expect, the bosses attack patterns and tells, and when you need to dodge.

After a few goes through you'll start to pick it up.

It's why people went from taking 40-50mins for CoF path 1 with an organised group at launch to about 10 mins now with randoms!

I remember Arah path 4 taking us about 4hrs the first time through! Can do a nice casual run in about 50mins now, and speed running teams do it in around 15-20!

Even though I played GW2 solidly for a number of months (Warrior and Guardian at 80), the lack of 'trinity' actually put me off in the end. No defined roles, whilst great for PUGs, means there is a more of a sense of looking out for number 1.

I loved being a healer/buffer/debuffer in WoW, but trying a full heal based Guardian or Warrior was just pointless. Hammer Guardian was my favourite, golf club whacking away mobs is satisfying. :D

Sc/F glass cannon ele is very dangerous in pvp with huge unpredictable burst - of course it does have a high skill requirement and I have not played it - only fought against. Very dangerous build though.

I may of missed something a year ago when I tried it, ofcourse I was < LVL80 at the time and that may have a lot to do with it, I will consider the idea. Do you mean SPVP or WVW

Got from 45 to just shy of 51 in about 20mins last night :p

Finally got enough Jute to break the 75 tailoring mark then with all the wool, cotton and silk I had stacked I went straight up to about 270 crafting and gained obscene amounts of xp doing so :D

Going to clear the zone with the Shatterer in tonight so I can start taking him down for the equip drops.

Just got my warrior to 400 in Weaponsmithing so I can craft myself a nice pair of Destroyer Axes, only to find out I didn't have the amount of Destroyer Lodestones that I thought I did. I was looking at the wrong stack of materials.

Gutted.

Remember with the Wardrobe now implemented you only actually have to craft 1 Destroyer axe to unlock the skin, then you can buy/craft any other axe with the stat combo you want and just apply the Destroyer look.

Saying that though, you don't really want to use Axe/Axe, yeah it looks awesome, but Axe/Mace or Axe/Sword is much better (skills wise). :)

I like my dual-axe and greatsword/longbow wielding Norn behemoth. That said though, I do swap out the off-hand for a sword on occasion as I like the Torment that Impale gives.
