H1Z1 - Zombie apocalypse sandbox from SOE

It looks like HL2, if valve had added zombies! HL2Z1 :D

The problem is, the most realistic looking zombie survival game is an absolute shell of a zombie survival game. I spent most of December (200+hrs in 1 month alone!* - havent done that on 95% of my steam list!) playing 7 Days to Die, its certainly no looker, but theres a game in there. Its not flawless, not by a long shot, but there is a game with all the fundamental aspects (base building, crafting, survival, teamwork etc).
* incl a few hours clocked up accidentally in the menus & minimised, 20h max though.

I doubt i'll touch it again for 6 months unless something big gets added (new PvE enemy like AI bandits or aggressive animals) but like people have been saying about WarZ (w/e) you can get a heck of a lot of enjoyment out of something which is far from perfect.
Graphics are important, but only when the rest of the game is worth playing. Hopefully theres more to come from that area in H1Z1, but clearly visuals isnt where the emphasis is, and if they build a well rounded game with all the important elements in there, it should be a decent game.

I see there's also a storm brewing over these 'paid for' supply drops, in that they may contain weapons. They've said you can only buy cosmetic items, definitely nothing P2W. This kinda questions that statement. Apparently the nature of the supply drop will give others on the server the opportunity to race to the location and create conflicts as everyone tries to get the goodies.
As a game feature, im fine with it. When its something achieved by paying for it, not so much. Its not the same as buying an item in a store and it being in your backpack, but its still spending money in the pursuit of gaining an advantage as a direct result, however you slice it.

I doubt i'll be playing this before its F2P, and even then i dunno, doesnt really fit my preference (i'd rather rent a server and play with friends how we want to play, not share a server with similar views/rulesets, even if its all free), if this was regular EA and went to £7.50 in 6mo like they all do, maybe i'd buy it, but the fact that its F2P just seems so counter-intuitive to then pay for it. If it was a decent game, i'd pay, but if they're giving it away for free then why should i?
Either way, i'll be keeping an eye on it, so for everyone elses sake i hope things go smoother than tonight.

Meh, just buy it in the morning when I wake at 5am, leave it downloading while at work and hopefully play when I get back at 3PM if it's not broken.

...and job done, bought it when I got up, it's downloaded and ready to play when I finish work at 3.

Assuming it connects of course ;)

And it appears it is Pay2Win...

Didn't they say concretely this wouldn't happen, that you had to find weapons and ammo in game. Hoping for airdrop restricted servers.

they drop in random locations and normal players can just steal them and kill the player who asked for the drop.

Not really true they drop very close to the player but the problem is for months they were saying it will only be cosmetic items then after everyone has bought it they find out they were lied to and when they complain Smeldeys response is "well dont buy it then"..... but this is too late for a lot.

He basically just gave the entire H1Z1 community a giant "**** you thanks for the cash"

He said somewhere which I can't find to quote, it will be set to 100 players before you can call one in, the planes will go slower and the radius will be increased, he also said the planes will deply green smoke. If fools want to waste money on that they will get owned every single time. Right now I think he said it was set to 50 players before one can be called in.

Found it:

"I'm going to weigh in here on this subject. We've been showing it clearly in all of the streams we have been doing. I made a point of personally doing it during last Friday's streams. We want them to be server events... so we make sure the whole server knows they're coming and I've personally been killed many times after I paid for them myself. So I fundamentally disagree with the argument. In terms of us not being honest about it - untrue to an extreme.

Quoting an 8 month old reddit post after numerous streams and interviews where we've been quite public AND putting it front and center in our "What to expect document" which was right on the purchase page just makes this blatantly unfair IMO. (here's the link - https://www.h1z1.com/dev-updates/h1z1-what-you-can-expect-in-early-access) or you can just go back to the steam page. So if you think it's P2W don't buy it. Don't play it. But I have to say wait until you've personally tried them before making the call. We included airdrops in both the $20 and the $40 versions just so you could see for yourselves. But to clear up the misconceptions -

1) You cannot call in airdrops until the servers are 1/4 full.

2) You can't call in airdrops without generating a ton of zombie heat.

3) the airdrops are random in what they deliver.

4) you are not guaranteed to get a single thing out of the airdrop you called in. You could die trying and you're out the money.

5) We fly the plane in very slowly and loudly.. we also stream green smoke from it you can see from very far away. This is all I'm going to say on the subject. We've been straight about it. We've called attention to it publicly and it's something we've decided we want in the game. It makes it more fun. It can shake things up. Please don't judge based on knee jerk reactions. Try it. Or watch more streams with people doing it.
Now with all that being said - we're going to be making some big changes to them in the next day or so.

1) Dramatically widening the radius they come in - it's too small from what we're observing.

2) Making sure the chance for guns is a much lower chance so they are much more rare. 3) Upping the minimum number of people on a server to even allow air drops. It's set at 50 right now and we're going to at least double it. We are serious about these being server events and contested. 4) Making the plane fly even slower.

Smed"

I would not call that p2w tbh if they do the said changes.

Smedley just posted this on Reddit.

We fixed the bad login issues. They were thorny but they are dead now.
We are still seeing sporadic reports of G29 and G99 errors. We're also seeing some issues where people are saying they log out and then when they try to login it says they can't because they don't own the game. We're going to need to investigate those first thing in the morning when we have our platform team in to deal with the issues. I want to be clear that we understand that some people still cannot get in and we take that seriously, but the stats show that the vast majority (over 90%) of the people that want in are having no problems. I'm not minimizing the other 10%.. it's just we need some people with fresh eyes to handle.
Here are some other important bugs we're working on.
1) Server framerates on some of our servers need work. We have a fix going live tomorrow morning that should help a lot with this. We're also going to be rebalancing some hardware. This is the first time we have had this many people in on 200 servers so the data is fresh. What this means to you is sometimes zombies are unresponsive and when you go searching for stuff you don't get a response quick enough. This is only on about 5% of the servers.
2) Chat seems to have disappeared on some of the servers at least. Voice chat still works.
3) We have some crash bugs we're dealing with. Both server and client.
4) We have a rare runaway memory situation on our servers that we're tracking down. Very rarely all of a sudden we see a server start to use 80 Gig of memory. When that happens it has a cascading effect on the other servers on the box. This is rare but we'll need to look at it asap.
5) A lot of other misc. bugs we're tracking down. A more complete list will be forthcoming after we've had a chance to actually review the data as a team tmw morning.
We're going home now.. everyone here is operating on 2 hours of sleep from last night and we have to send people home but we'll be right back in tomorrow morning and back at it.
Have a good night/morning
Smed

I am still unable to login on the splash screen.

Early Access. Still in Development. This is the kind of feedback they were looking for. I'm sure they'll balance it even further.

But no, everybody is jumping aboard the pay2win wagon instantly :D :D

Blows my mind that people expect a balanced game within hours of releasing as Early Access.

Haven't been able to play yet, looking forward to tonight providing I can.

Do I care about weapons being in air drops? Not really, if this was a real world you wouldn't expect there to be a santa hat and some pink gloves in an airdrop. You'd expect food, ammo and most probably a weapon.

Quite refreshing to see a game company who is easy to get hold up and who is giving constant updates regarding the issues. Shame there is such a time difference though and it would have been nice if they had planned a roll out early morning on the 16th so that they would have a full day to go through stuff rather than "going live" at 2 or 3pm in the afternoon, not giving them much time.

The game on steam claims I've played for over an hour, I'm also plagued by this log in bug.

What are my chances of getting a refund through steam?

Less than 12 hours after the release of an early access game which clearly states on the shop page that it will contain bugs. You want a refund as you can't login yet?

Good luck.
