I've never played these genre of games, Can someone give me an idea of what to expect if I get it? Is the goal to survive as long as you can? If so, what happens if I only want to play for say 30 minutes, is that pointless?
Is it not just pure rage inducing, being sniped from afar or killed after you have managed to last an hour or so, only to in essence start over? Or am I not understanding how these things work properly?
You have to survive and basically its a free roaming game which can be played in a variety of ways.
If you fancy playing for 30 mins then you'll be fine, simply log out and log back in and your stuff (on your person) will still be there. Chances are that if you have built up a small base that will still be there too however there is talk of people being able to damage houses, etc to steal what's inside.
You can either be a loner and survive on your own (which imo is pretty boring) and avoid other people. You can be a bandit and basically hunt down and kill everybody you see to find loot (weapons, food, etc) that way. You can try and work with people if you find the right people on the sever or you could join a group and use voice comms (teamspeak) to properly work together.
That's the main appeal of this game, being able to play as you want and never being properly able to trust who you come across. If you have watched "The Walking Dead" series then it's pretty much that but in game form and how epic you make your playing experience is really down to yourself.
For me, the fun is playing with a group of mates.
I actually remember the first time I played WarZ with some friends and there was just the three of us. Not really knowing the game or map as it had just come out we basically stuck together, found a few weapons and went exploring. We came across a group of people ahead of us further down the road so we stalked them for a while until they got to a barn. We were constantly debating whether we should just kill them, rob them or leave them be. In the end one saw us, we took him out and his buddies hid in the barn. We taunted them with chat, they refused to come out so we went in after them and stole their stuff.
It's the "not knowing" element of this genre that makes it what it is. We have yet to see a complete game come out which ticks all the boxes and gets everything right.
