Half-Life: Alyx

Even if you can afford an Index, it's out of stock, and it's not likely to be available again until February. :(

Yeah really sucks. I ordered mine early december and got it delivered within a couple of days. Then it become out of stock. Really lucky I just impulse bought it out of no where.

I'd suggest people grab a Quest and wait for the Index to come back in stock. The Quest gives something to VR no other VR headset can anyway.

I've decided to go for an Index as I got a nice bonus so I can justify it, plus I'm not happy about Facebook changing the Oculus social features so they require a facebook account. (I don't have a Facebook account, and don't want one).

Some new screenshots have emerged. Looking very tasty.

I remember reading that Valve might on Index sets be able to use the brightness setting as a custom slider on a scene by scene basis to adjust the brightness to how the picture should be. Do you know if this is a myth which has not been dispelled or not?

That would have been incredible.

How have i missed this???!??!?

i dont have VR... costs of hardware aside, how much space do i need? will i be running round the room unable to see? that wont end well in my house... Can i sit on a chair and do it? VR noob obviously

You'll need room to stretch your arms out and swing them if necessary. Ideally, you'd want at least enough room to take a step in any direction, but it's not essential.
Guess you could sit on a chair if you set your height accordingly in the software.

Oh thats not too bad then... heads over to ebay to look at VR headsets.... Nope, still too expensive :(

I'm still waiting for the Index to go back in stock before I get this. I don't want to spend £40 to play this on my CV1 or Quest with link when I could get it free with the Index (especially as the Index is so expensive).

As someone who is looking at this game for their first step into VR, can anyone please explain why they are using some kind of weird skip to move? What's wrong with a joystick and moving the player using that? Jumping between spaces just seems... odd, jarring and not very smooth.

It's optional. Teleport to move can help with motion sickness and discomfort which some people experience with vr.

You can also you use thumbsticks to move in the more traditional way. This method felt weird to me at 1st but I got used to it after a few hours. It can make some people really sick though so the teleporting option helps with that.

Yep, I've had a couple of friends either almost lose their balance or feel nauseous with smooth movement in some games. One even wanted to throw up after spinning a car in Project Cars 2.

I don't like teleportation personally, but some people will need it. It's good to have both options.

There's a VR conversion of HL1 on the Quest. You can play the entire game in VR, and it's an excellent experience. (Though you need good VR legs, as there's no teleport movement).

I played through the Doom 3 conversion which was pretty good other than falling through some floors at times lol. I was more think of the whole experience of the new game. Most VR games are very short. I'm hoping this is a game I will keep playing for a while and come back to later. I completed HL1 and 2 more than once.
