That's not surprising. McLaren have been planning to build their own engines since at least 2008. It's part of why McLaren Automotive was setup.

That article must be almost 2 years old. But I wouldn't be surprised if they are still thinking about making their own for 2014. They need to get a shimmy on though, Renault, Ferrari and Mercedes (and I think Pure and Cosworth) are well down the development route already.

How old is that article, considering the '2013 engine rules' became the '2014 engine rules' back in June 2011...

Don't know..sorry

Well big ron has said on tv that only 10% of Mclaren money will be in F1 by 2014.

Also Lauda to join Mercedes in advisory role.

I think this is a move that Hamilton felt he had to make. Good for him - I don't really like him or the Mercedes team, but can certainly recognise that he's a fantastically quick driver on his day, and Brawn has championship experience and pedigree. I don't believe Hamilton can galvanise a team around him though - certainly not in car setup and motivation. They're not exactly crying at McLaren - disappointed, yes. Upset, no.

I'm not so interested in the Lewis and Nicole, and what happens to the whole bling display over at Mercedes. I'm more interested in the positive story developing over at McLaren. I think this is a great move for Perez. He's joining one of the top teams, and in Button he has a driver that he can both compete with and also learn a good deal from. I can see the next couple of years being a fantastic grounding and education for him in what could be a really promising F1 career. He's shown enough to suggest he can be as quick or quicker than Button, and he's clearly got some racecraft and nouse about him.

Suddenly 2012 doesn't seem as exciting as 2013 could be!

Perez will be hoping McLaren make a car that quals outside the top 10 so he can run a better strategy than the guys in the top 10 as has proved on occasion at Sauber :)

To be fair, during the Brawn cost cutting it was people they lost, not buildings. Didn't they cut something like 40% of their staff?

and hired them back + more in 2011

they also gave up on the car halfway into 2010 and decided to get a half season head start on the w02 and look how that turned out.

barely any upgrades on the 2012 car pretty muich the only upgrades came this race.

I read somewhere they had some sort of new "super" simulator being created/ already created?
finished at the end of last year

Hm, kind of conflicted now I support Hamilton and McLaren, never liked either button or Mercedes much.

Not as it matters much as if F1 goes full pay to view Il only ever read about the results after anyway.

I feel it's a terrible move, and at the moment, I think I won't be follwing Lewis next year because of it..

The good news is that a driver change up at least gives us some 'comparative' information about drivers..
I have always had the impression Rosberg is pretty decent, so there is a chance Lewis may struggle against him considering he's not been too shabby against MSC..
And Perez/Button, the outcome of that will be interesting..

If Lewis moved to Redbull/Renault/Ferrari, I'd understand, but Merc? All hot-air and under-delivery.... One lucky break with Honda's double diffuser, and it's all gone backwards fast.. they don't have the technical team to properly push the car forward..
