Hamilton to Mercedes? BBC

So other than money, how does Whitmarsh read Lewis' decision? What would Lewis have said to Whitmarsh when asked why he wants to go? Would he have just said McLaren aren't reliable enough? It can only be that reason because they certainly have the fastest cars.

Im actually starting to buy the XIX pushing to hard idea.

Maybe he just wants a new challenge and to "grow" away from Mclaren :)

Sure, that's perhaps what he told Whitmarsh. Nevertheless, if you're driving the fastest car, then reading between the lines, there's no other way Whitmarsh can take this except that obviously Hamilton doesn't believe in McLaren anymore, ie, questioning their reliability. Pretty stupid though considering he must be aware he's simply going from the frying pan into the fire.

He did better than any of us thought but I still think Hamilton is a step up as shown this year. Without the lost points he would be considerably ahead this year and has been far far better on saturdays.

Last year it took LH's worst season and JB's best ever season to beat him. By JB's own words it was the best he had ever driven. This year the points table doesn't tell the full story, much like Nico and MS.

I fear for Mclaren next year with JB's qualifying pace. It's why he's never been in with a shout this year and LH has despite all the points lost.

Remember JB lost potentially 3 wins this season alone (China where he was 2nd to Rosberg because of the pit foul up and Italy a few weeks ago with fuel pickup issues and another early on where he understeered into a back marker while leading) - dont get me wrong I know LH has lost a lot of points also but its not as clear cut as you make out in LH's favour either

Also remember that JB had significantly more issues at the beginning of this season with the new tyres due to his smoother driving style. He was unlucky finding a quirk with the tyres that took McLaren 5 - 6 races to work out how to fix. Admittedly some LH failed in as well, but JB was affected much worse.

Qualifying is a minus without a doubt, but not only has that improved over the last few weeks /races, but that also surely shows how much better he must be in the races to STILL be so close relatively even given the bad qualifying.

I reckon Perez might just surprise us and beat Jenson next year.

Who knows, but Perez will have to get fitter, get used to a high percentage increase in offtrack commitments and deal with the constant attention at the track even more so than now by being in a leading team

Maybe it will be like a duck to water, maybe it wont be - but it isnt usually as simple as just turning up at a big team and going fast immediately (without building the team around you)

I see a guy who had it all and he has lost his edge, It all went wrong with his farther and his bint (can't stand her) Her coming out with things like "F1 is too dangerous" it's got to play with the guys head. He doesn't seem to have that hunger he once had, I know it all sounds a little "eye of the tiger" but Perez seems properly hungry. Maybe it is a good thing for him to get away and into a different situation see if he can grow like we have seen Button grow over the years. All the past best drivers had stints in lesser teams? I think things need to change in his off the track life for us to see the Lewis we thought had it all... Who knows if that will happen, Guy could end up moving to the US and joining one of their series if it all goes wrong. Good luck to Perez from me.

Unfortunately in this day and age of no testing and money being more important than skill, the 'traditional' route to the top of test driver to low team to better team to top team is gone. Its now about impressing enough and getting enough money together to get thrown into a top team and pray to god you can perform well enough to stick around. Hamilton was one of the first of these, and he managed to stay. So maybe being at Mercedes will provide that building time that he didn't get due to his route into F1?

Perez needs to perform too, or he may end up like Heikki. Its a massive risk for him, I hope he does well.

An interesting question, how many successful drivers have had success at a team, left, and then later returned to that team and had more success?

Agreed, Guess we will see. Will be a interesting story to watch in 2013 before the 2014 reg change which could/should reset everything.

Maybe Lewis is being a bit daft and thinking his "stock" is always going to be high as he is a ex champ? I bet Alonso has a nice big grin on his face about now.

You are revising history there, China he had no answer to Nico, Monza he was not going to win, and he was not leading when he ran into a backmarker.

Jenson spent race after race doing nothing, there lies the problem and the gap between Lewis should be much larger.

I've just been talking to someone at work who has friends that frequent the Rossetti in Brackley (I've not been in there even though the folks live 100 meters from it) and they said they overheard a conversation with RB and some other chap talking over lunch (today) that Lewis will be joining them next season.

Derp derp !

My sources were right. In your face doubters. :D

I think Lewis is very hungry, hence his annoyance and childish behaviour (more so last year) when things go wrong. Tbh, I can't help feeling that Button isn't very hungry. On the one hand he's very mature and takes it all on the chin when things go pear shaped which has been most of the time, but his laid back 'cest la vie' attitude, cheeky smile and humour makes me think he's comfortable with his lot, would like to win, but if he doesn't, well hey, so what. He's won a WDC and he's very into his cycling and athletic events. I don't get the feeling racing is as important to him as it is to Hamilton. But I might be completely misreading him.

He finished 20 seconds behind

Yes? And?

No, you're right. Fair enough, it was all the way back in April, no reason for anyone on here to remember back that far....hell's teeth. I guess I'll have to put this one in simple language for you.

[Fisher Price mode]

Had the delay in the pits not occurred, Button would have come out ahead of Massa and not ended up in the train behind him. Without that delay, he could have caught Rosberg and maybe even passed him.

Savvy? Any further questions? Take your time, no rush.

Well, what d'you expect? If you're going to post fact-blind toss, I'm not exactly going to respond ultra-politely.

G'night.

Sums up all that is wrong with this section when even a simple question is met with such an attitude.

I doubt Button would have won the race, as I said he had no real answer to Nico who had the superior pace on the day.
