i suspect 70% on here never watched f1 in the 90s with some of the comments they come out with
some people would have us think an average driver can luck into 91 race wins because in the 90s there was no competition
Totally agree.
You can certainly "luck" into a great car which is much faster than everybody else. You might win a title. But to win 7 titles, 91 races, so many podiums, so many points...it is impossible to "luck" into that situation.
The greatest thing about what MSc did was when he moved to Ferrari - a dog of a car. The team had not won a WDC title for 17 years (odd). He left the all-conquering Bennetton, for a Ferrari team who were making cars, which would scrap 1-2 wins per year.
At the time, the way it worked was that the best drivers would move to the best team/car. If your car became slow, the top driver would move away. But MSc bucked this trend and moved in the opposite direction. I'd never seen anything like this. At the time, most said he cared more about money than winning....but the guy did what he set out to achieve. Even Senna (who many regard as the all round fastest driver of all time), would not have considered "down grading" to another team, to make them great. In 1994, he "upgraded" to Williams as McLaren just weren't fast enough. MSc won the title that year (under dubious circumstances), but won the title the next year, at a canter.
The fastest driver ever...probably not.
The fairest driver ever...certainly not.
The most complete driver ever...definitely.
In his 2nd career though, he is just...average.
