Hmm... :(. Usually before doing stuff like this, they go through really rigorous safety checks and wear top notch protection - for something like this to happen it must have gone badly wrong. I better not start speculation to derail the thread from Hammond himself but I really hope it isn't as serious as it sounds and that it is merely just protective reporting from the BBC.

Man, this really sucks. If there's one programme I watch to make me laugh during the week it is Top Gear. That and SniffPetrol are the best motoring media out there.

Just heard about this on the 10'o'clock news, I'm really shocked  ....I hope he pulls through as he comes across on Top Gear as a really genuine nice and funny guy!

Come on Hamster! We're all rooting for you! :)

:( I hope he has a full and speedy recovery. He's a great presenter, and seems a really nice bloke.

Mr Hammond was hurt while filming an edition of the show near Leeds.

He was reportedly trying to set a new land speed record for Britain in a jet-powered Vampire car when it overturned.

Mr Hammond was said to have been reaching speeds of up to 280mph as the accident happened.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

Firefighter Dave Ogden, who witnessed the crash, told Sky News that the 36-year-old presenter was able to speak as he was taken out of the wreckage of the car.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at Elvington airfield, southeast of York, where the filming was taking place.

The BBC report has also been updated with a comment from Quentin Wilson of all people.

He's at the LGI so he's in good care. He'll be well looked after.

Really, really hope he pulls through this. He's one of my favourite TV presenters.

As bent as it might sound, I see the likes of Hamster, JC and May the real celebrities of this world.

They don't make the headlines for being drug addicts, alcoholics or becasue they beat up their wives/girlfriends. They're honest down to earth guys who are inspirational, they're ace as boobs!

Hammond has a wife and two daughters, my thoughts go out to them.
