Hard Drive Pricing going up at an alarming rate!!!!

1TB up to £60!?! That's as much as the Purple Shirts....

What are we putting the cause down to?

When are we expecting them to return to normal?

Western Digital got hit by flooding in 2 factories where major equipment got damaged so their not pushing as much out, unfortunatelly with supply and demand as it works less stock or competion from other manufactures will always push prices up. Oh and the economic mess the world is in doesn't help either :(

Does this mean SSD pricing will go up as well or is it just mech drives?

SSD seems fine, should be fine. :)

Mechanical increases are due to WD's, Seagate and Hitachi's fabs been under water, severe flooding causing a major disruption in production.

Only Samsung is OK and they now no longer have product left.

Essentially mechanical drives have gone from say their been 100 drives available 90 people wanting them. To now there been 30 drives available and 100 people wanting them.

Hence demand outweighing supply massively, hence huge price increases.

Maybe this will force the SSD upgrade path for myself. Need another mech drive myself really but i wouldn't be willing to pay £100+ for 1TB

Gah, I've been watching the price of the Seagate ST33000650NS (enterprise class 3TB) waiting for it to drop :(.

Might just get and buy a load of WD WD2003FYYS (enterprise class 2TB) instead. They're already up £25 on what they were :(.

I took Gibbo's advice and grabbed a well priced F3 1TB I spotted locally for £48. That isn't for me but I am seriously considering saving for a Crucial M4 and just keeping my 320Gb for storage until normality returns to the market.

Is the 2TB drive at 5200 rpm much of a speed difference? It occurred to me that it may be negligible due to the data being closer together? Or is it just an additional platter?

Backup purposes only for my WHS.

So why have the Samsungs shot up in price?

Because they have no more stock. The suppliers (distributors) know there is no more stock incoming, and there will be shortages. So they have put the pricing up loads to make more money on them.

In fact many suppliers are refusing to sell any and are holding onto the stock they have hoping that they can get a far higher price in a few weeks time.
